It is a obvious fact that we are moving more towards Democratic Socialism, much like where Europe. It is funny though when you think about it, we blazed our trail in an unknown land for something different than what was offered over there, but then turn around and listen to those who try to take us down the European Road.

We could shut our borders and still have every thing we need to live a good life. Few nations can say that. People hate on us because we are who we are. Proud Americans. This year I've been to South Korea, Amsterdam, Norway, and Singapore. Everywhere I've been I haven't had any ill feelings or drama. I work with people from all over Europe and from the four corners of the States and everywhere in between. The people I work with don't mind us Americans. Possibly it's due to the work ethics of the industry. I don't know. We all poke fun of each other's countries and accents making the time pass. No one gets their feelings hurt and everyone gets a good laugh. Every country has it's advantages and disadvantages.

Arguing who has the better country is ignorant. In a fight...U.S.A. would be the last man standing.

The point i was making was simple, we are just as capitalistic as the good old USA, there is no difference between us in that, as stated we actually invented the system...

As people we are just as independant as you there we fought our wars to stay independant and sometimes back to back with the USA.

Problem is most have a skewered look at our "socialism" propagated by the rightwing press there.
USA citizens that actually have been here for a longer time know better, ask anyone of the 50.000 USA people that work or study here.

As Brake Weight stated there is no animosity here against the USA nor their people, just against the wrong perception of our system that gets classified as "communist" with a quite broad stroke of the brush.

I'm comfortable with you do things your way, just don't judge us wrong, and don't pop the point the USA is best in all, because that isn't reality.

Another mistaken notion of Americans is that we only speak one language. We speak all of them. German, French, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Hebrew, Arabic - you name it. It is a mix of all cultures and languages that also speak English.

Question is do all people speak these languages or all 2nd or 3rd generation immigrants still speak the old language?
Talking to my family that went to live in the USA after WW2 i can already notice the difference of the first generation use of their old motherlanguage, their children have great problems using it, their children didn't learn Dutch at all, as most of the 8 million Dutch decendants won't speak Dutch anymore.

Here we all learn 2 additional languages or most even 3 different languages.
Every kid in school has to learn minimal 2, most follow the 3rd course as well.

That was already so when i went to school 45 years back, as did my kids.
I actually speak and write in 5 languages including my own Dutch.
Nothing special i know several people that can do even more, most visit several countries in Europe on their extended hollidays and learn the language there too.

There is a bigger need to speak several languages here as in the USA, if i travel 300 miles in any direction i will be in Germany, Belgium/France England, or Denmark, each with it's own language.
Not so much in the USA.

I think another reason Americans are the way we are is in the fact many have no heritage/history. Our country is a melting pot of descendants of every culture on the planet. I was born an American. But I am a Southerner by the grace of God. 200 years or so ago my people came over and were immigrant share croppers. My grandfather has a decent sized piece of land his people bought over a couple of generations. We also have states that are larger than most any other country. Texas is bigger than France, Montana has more coverage than Norway, etc. and etc. Our democracy and 'American Dream'...as well as freebie handouts...is why many choose to come here.

Although our president is slowing killing America. There is still a glimmer of hope that we can get back to our former self. Voting lately has been for the lesser of two evils. But I still vote.

Yeah, it is kinda unique to travel across 3,500 miles of the US and still be able to talk to someone with a common language. We like it. Sure China and Russia can also say the same thing as well. As for EU, if you travel 500 miles (sorry; ~700km) in some instances; you would find yourself in a country that has a language that wasn't covered in your basic two - or even with three for that matter . . . lol . . . you would still be a foreigner . . .

Agreed, you do have a large country.

Luckily most countries here make it mandatory to have English as first choice, but in France you better use the French language, they can do English, but won't and don't try German there they have a sore spot for Germans, something to do with WW1 and WW2...

Having English, German, French, Spanish, and Frisian next to my Dutch language covers most area's.
Might take up Portugese if i plan a holliday to there.

Using the languages on the Ham radio keeps it fresh and you keep fluent in it.
Not using it means you forget most of it in a few years, and need some re learning fast.
Takes me mostly a day in France to get back into it fluently though, they speak quite fast and every region has it's own dialect to get used to.
At least they appreciate it that you try.
On the radio you mostly use standard phrases and sentences, going in deeper you need refreshing up as i found out several times.
