I will take delivery of a "New" RCI 2985Dx in a couple weeks. It has had the channel mods done to it and the DK was turned down to something in the 1.5w range, but I am not sure yet, or of the swing. Also not sure if the clarifier was unlocked.

What I do know is, it has been in the box for a couple years, since the present owner bought it as a package deal, and it was opened up last week to get pics of it. It looks absolutely brand spanking new. Not even any dust in the speaker holes. He never used it other than to test it was working and to see what he had.

So, I am getting it and would love to know more about this model. One thing I am really curious about is, I have seen pictures of the 2985DX and some of them look greenish gray and some are shiny black. Mine is shiny black. What's that about? I understand the green one is an earlier model, but what is the difference inside, if any?

Can someone explain how the channel mods work in the 2985dx? Is it the same e-chip as the 2995 uses? And what does the "channel mod" really mean. Extra 11 meter channels? Or is that something else. I don't know how this works. It's like most things, reviews always just assume that you already know all the slang terms. So please explain like I am a new guy, which I am. Sort of. :p

Thanks all. I am really stoked.

DK was turned down already when the present owner got it. I assume by some shop like Bells, or whoever it was bought from, or by the original owner, who worked on his own stuff.

I assume it was to use a low drive amp? I really am new, so that is just my guess at this point. We'll never really know.

Nobody knows?

Anyway, about another week and I will have my BBB. [Big Black Box] For better or worse. Good conditions or bad.

Thanks, me to. I am buying from a friend. Price is a little steep, but this radio is essentially new from what he tells me and I can see.

He told me I could get off the hook if I found something better, but after looking around at the Galaxy and some others, I don't think there is anything that much better at the price, but, I would still like to hear what owners have to say.

However, just the fact that owners haven't posted means there is probably very little bad to say about this model. ;)

Thanks, and I know the feeling. I worked overtime this month just to pay for it so I don't dip into my living expenses. I am pretty sure I am really going to enjoy it. :)

That radio has variable power so you should be able to change the AM carrier yourself from say 1-8 watts. With the RCI radio's I would keep the clarifier locked. If you need to slide just move the small dot over to the last digit and hit the up/down button.

Thanks for the information. I understand that the original owner my friend got it from, did all his own work. Other than having 11 meters and he said, adjusting the DK to 1.5w or so, he doesn't know what else was done. When he got it, he unpacked, used it a few days, long enough to know it worked good, then put it back in the box. His first love was the 2980WX he also got from him, and that was the one he decided to use. He wasn't really looking to sell the 2985DX till I pestered him about it.

Must me nice heh? :p

I got one just like that and love it. Actually got mine in a similar manner. It was pretty much brand new, minus the box. Great receive, and from what reports I get and what the local crowd tells me it has great audio. I usually use a stock mic with it, some times I use a d104 m6b. Pretty much tit for tat.

Nice find, I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Thanks Kornbread. I did find out a little more about it, although the guy I am buying from also got a 2980wx and a big amp in a package deal, more than two years ago. He did try the radio for about a week, then decide he like the 2980wx more and put this one back in the box, till he took it out to take those pictures.

So right off, his memory of what the original owner told him about it is sketchy. He did say that the guy was a Ham and did his own work and modifications on his stuff. This one has had 11 meter channels added, [not sure if this is the e-chip or not?] and he said the DK was turned down to under 2w, although, there is a knob to do that, isn't there?

At any rate, this radio is virtually new in the box, I know I will love it and I can barely wait till it gets here. Should be here by the end of the coming week. I'll have more pics then and a report on what I got. LOL

<More audio> Well, "my" 2985dx is en-route. Expected delivery is Thursday. Weighed 28 pounds at the Post Office. Can't remember any time in the last decade when I was this excited about anything. LOL

LOL, I think I am going to have to break down and buy a beanpole antenna. Cause every morning for the last month, the first thing I do in the morning is turn it on and shout for 303 Spaceman and then 690 Arkansas. The dipole just bounces wrong to talk that close I guess.

Just talked to Montego Baby, 001 Jamaica for a good minute, he is still there.
