SSB radio for a AB-1 4x1446?

I'm currently running a DX959 in front of my 4x1446 AB-1...what would be a "better" radio, as far as driving this 4-pill? I'm assuming a dual-final radio would not be too much input drive for this 4-pill?? I still want it to be clean.

Cobra 148
cant go wrong

you asked for a "better " radio

Same thing as a Uniden Grant XL if I remember correctly, and I have two of those already...

I put the Uniden grant in front of the 4x1446, and its definitely not pushing anywhere close to the same output as the DX959...but I have been getting my numbers called routinely when the skip's rolling (which is more than I can say for the DX959 as of late). Barefooted, I might as well be talking to a door...I rarely get answered, even on AM.

I did buy some RG8 to install in place of some weathered RG8X, and bought a TS 667V at the same time...so that should take care of my getting out issue!

there ya go .......
its not all about the watts . the audio circuits in the new radios just arnt as effective as the old school classics ;) .

IMD ? , yes ? I have a Palomar 4 x 1446 box that will show me very close to 500 pep with a 20 pep radio , although it has only been slightly cleaned up for SSB use . IMD ? Now I would bet to say if I put a filter inline with this box I would more then likely lose 100 or so pep watts.

I also have a Messenger 4 x 1446 AB box , exactly like this one . Cobra XL500 LINEAR Amplifier With the same 20 watt pep radio on AM and SSB , I get 300 clean pep watts. 70 x 4 with the 1446s

So what does a tank curcuit really do ? or good filtering do to a well made amplifier ? Does it take the IMD watts out of the picture and then gives a more cleanful truthful readings ?

You don't really think that these IMD producing class C units would really come close to doing what they "claim" to do if they were full of AB biasing and filtering do you ? Hmmmm

The best filter you can use is your brain.
Don't turn the knobs full right.

One last question...with the amps that have a variable, I've heard they shouldn't be used because they (the variable) tend to fail? I assume this is mainly on amps that can have more than a typical (read: export) radio put in front of them??

I typically try to run the amp wide open, and use the variable on the radio...is this right?

Yes that's right and the reason variable pots fail if usually from having too much rf applied so if the radio's drive level is too high one must lower it internally.

The radio's variable is best for most situations and is a preferred method of mine also.

hey peakaboo , i was going by what jack/freecell had told me a few years ago about the 1446 . he told me that it is rated at 70 watts pep @ 50 MHz , but that @ 27 MHz it could cleanly do 90 watts pep .

im %99 sure i didnt missunderstand him . did he give me some bad information ?
i know you really know your feces about amps and would appreciate your comments on it .

thanks

At 90 watts it is producing more IMD than it would at 60. It has been a while since I have looked at it on spec analyzer but from I remember it was noticeable. I would go check now but the CRT went south on my spec analyzer:sad:
IMD is going to be there with any of the pills if you drive them to there rated output. As long as you dont go beyond that they are still pretty clean. IMD is not near as bothersome to a lot of people as harmonics from over drive and saturation. So yeah I guess you could say that you can 90 watts cleanly from a 1446, I know I found them to be amazing little pills.

the ts 667v will work better with the galaxy/ uniden cause it has a built in driver
so definately should see more out of it.may wanna just use the galaxy with it
cause it has variable power.careful not to overload the driver
