State Scanner Laws

When more states go to systems like the one in illinois STARCOM 21 The laws will become un needed as most of the comms will be digital and voice will be secondary to full digital frequency hopping Radios anyway. Voice will not die and the scanner will become more money out if the pocket book for the few who want or need to listen. Full APCO 25 radios are coming down the pike for all systems and inter department operatorabilty will be mandated. Just so a disaster like what happened in the south will never happen again hopefully.
That is if Louisiana can get some of the money from the crooked powers that be down their FAT POCKETS.

They can have that million dollar digital systems. But what makes it more reliable than VHF/UHF in an emergency?

They are serious about this here in Nebraska depending upon which officier stops you.I was stopped one time and the cop looked at my RCI 2950 and asked if it was a scanner . I picked up the mike keyed it and a truck driver responded and I was let go and went on my way.If you get caught speeding with a scanner in your vehicle they may or may not take from you depending on thier mood and or knowledge of the law.

i had a cop in nj psyiclly stop me coming off a train

psyiclly took my ht then tried transmitting on what he thought
was his police frequency..
instead he changed the frequency to what was main fire dispatch in bklyn nyc..

he was pleased it didnt transmit on his cop frequency

gave me back my ht saying
regardless of who i am or any licence it is illegal to have radio capible of transmitting on police frequency's

well when i got home i emailed the mayor as well as head of police and legal department in my city

they all kept calling me (internal affairs) to ask me to press charges..
i said i was not interested in doing so...just wanted the cop to know he did wrong and i would not tolorate such a happening again..

funny thing is..
it has been about 2 years and i have not even seen the cop since

Good job KC on calling the mayor and the police. As much as respect and like cops, there are too many that use their position of authority in a belligerent manner. Sad thing is, he isn't even correct about what the law is. It is perfectly legal for a licensed ham to posess a modified radio, even if that gives it the ability to TX on a police freq. Glad you stood up for your rights.

I did then as i would now..

some just think they can do what they want
whether via bullying or a power trip

not with me though..

to top it off that guy in changing frequencys had not even gone to his stations frequency but a fire frequency in the next state lol

and although i have their frequency's in memory
i am not stupid enough to keep them so they can just be keyed up

i actually had a friend who at one time was like oh let me talk to the cops
he grabed hold of my ht in a pizzaria saying it is ok my dad is a cop

no it was not ok and i was glad i didnt have it fully set
i keep tones and all locked in memory just need to turn on duplex lol
