I need some help with this I'm trying to decide between one of these the Stryker 955 Is brand new from dealer aligned, swing kit and Converted For 469.00 the ranger is preowned the guy said its been at a shop restoring all to normal and will include a D104 mic For 500.00 This will be a base setup which way should I go? Please help me decide... FWIW I'm getting my HAM License also....

If you're going ham i wouldn't buy an export radio, id buy a quality amateur radio. I love my 2995 base. Low side is set up for low drive amps and has the 2 pill toshiba amp. My mosfet cobra 29 drives my tube amp bettet than the ranger so im on that alot. If it were my choice and i couldn't buy both id buy the 2995 first.

Both of these will work on 10 meters but are awkward for ham use. The channels and band selector are annoying for anything but CB

I would go with the Stryker but the swing mod scares me. Those work fine from the factory. Just remove the resistor for the frequency expansion and you're good to go. They are $400 on Amazon.

I hear Stryker 955 all across the US, they sound good, audio is clear on sideband , I hear more 2995's but audio is not as good in my opinion
My vote is for the Stryker, buy it from a shop like Bell's CB that will do the frequency conversion, peak, tune, and align, without voiding your warranty
don't do a swing mod
For a few more Benjamin's you can get a ICOM 718 that you can Mars mod for 11 meters and be HF ready when you get your ticket

What I mean by annoying is when you get to ch 40 and then have to flip the band switch, then dial someone in with the clarifier. When you've gotten used to a vfo on a ham rig it's annoying.

The peak and tune on a Stryker 955 is a ripoff. They come out of the box on frequency and making the power the manufacturer advertises. The finals are being pushed at that level already. The last thing it needs is a peak and tune.
