Stryker SR-955 quick tune question

OOPS - It not!

It's W4 for RX S-Meter adj side...AM and FM
W5? That is RX for SSB S-Meter adj...
Right by "Network" coils on main PCB..."behind" the shield towards the front - of the RFI shield mid-section.

For some ungodly reason, the TX side is CPU controlled.

But uses ANL and ALC/AMC controls to limit it on the main PCB.

Yeah, I saw those screened on the board. Apparently, when the radio is putting out about 18 watts carrier, the meter registers about 10W LOL. Not that it really matters, but I am a bit OCD when it comes to this stuff. I have an inline meter so it's no big deal. I did send a note into Stryker support, though. Let's see if they respond. Thanx!

Just so you know, there may be a section in the CPU setup "menu" that is part of the driver stuff for the segments.

Post a copy of that response here, I know it can help a lot of those with similar problems in figuring out the "increment" level the Display "segments" represent.

So far, no response from Stryker. Either they don't get their messages if sent after hours, or they are avoiding my question. I'll try again.

On another note, I see reference to W501 on the board that is labeled AM mod. According to the alignment instructions ( if anyone can make sense of them) it says to not adjust it, it must stay "in the middle". I like to run my radios with a little head room in the modulation so I can keep the mic itself turned down a bit so as to avoid getting distortion from the mic amp. Was wondering if it's actually safe to bump the W501 up a little and make up for it on the mic and mic gain control.

In Most of the repairs I've done, this thing is spun beyond its stops...

W501 is the "Mod leveler" so the others like FM and SSB - all sound and drive the same.

W500 is FM "Level" for deviation... set to offset the AM mod level so they "drive" the same.

There is no SSB "Mod adj" Only SSB ALC (W6 Helps with this) so they use SSB signal as the "Base reference" then goes from there to AM and FM drive levels.

Excellent info. Thanx very much! I'd never crank the thing as you mentioned, but I'd like just enough to where I can turn my mic to about half and use my mic gain on the radio for fine adjustment

Just in case someone wants to know, this worked out perfectly. I kicked up the W501 AM mod pot just a tad. It allowed me to turn the microphone down and keep my mic gain on the radio set at about 2 oclock. Knocking the mic gain down keeps the distortion to a minimum and the mic gain control now has some headroom. Did an on-air audio check with a couple locals and some DX and receive rave reports. Crisp, clean and clear loud audio. Had to reset the AM ANL to get the proper forward swing between high and low, tho. also, I found that when I turn the AM power down low I must also turn the mic gain down or it will over modulate. Not a problem doing so. This really did work out well.

I did finally receive a note from Stryker about the inaccurate meter. I was told the meter is controlled by the cpu, and the only way to change it's calibration is to change some component values.

As a side question; The current 955hpc radios, are they the Gen 2?

Gen 2 is the SMD and yes, even Gen 3 (programmable) are also SMD. (The point of origin helps with the tell-tale Stryker was USA as OEM 1st gen, but when shoved overseas, now has several points of origin)

To hear that response is what I thought they'd say, so now these changes (throws) it back into our laps and we have to figure out the changes in the meter "weighting" to offset the changes in output done to it.

IT's not that simple...

Why? Both RX and TX share that same input line - to change one will offset the other by a similar amount. Meaning - you can tone down that wild swing on TX, but kills the S-meter side to make it look like everyone else is a duck - but then, some do that anyways...so I guess you have nothing to lose...

Yeah, I'm not going into that. It's not worth effort for me. I just thought if it was a quick tweak on a pot I could match my external meter. Sometimes my OCD just kicks in!! LOL. So, anyhow, the Gen 3 is the new non-adjustable version?

With some constraints I can only say - they are working on it.

Not that is hasn't been published...

(Hint: Programmable)
The reason I ask is that I found a few of the 955s for $384.00 while everyone else is either out of stock or getting near 600 bux. I thought I'd pick up another one at that price so I asked to make sure they were current, not returned or open boxes. He said factory fresh Gen 2 radios

Get them while you can - the new batch may or may not be as good of quality as current events may change the efforts placed in manufacturing and resources used for such matters.

Either way, they may be far more expen$ive...

Yup. Got one coming. Bell's has them if anyone wants one.
