I have a 955hp that I got from Bells about a year ago. I have been really happy with it. Now sometimes I will get an swr high alert on ssb, and the radio will show infinity. If I switch to am it goes back down, and if I turn the power down to 10 o'clock it goes back down. Any idea what I should be looking at? All I have is a RadioShack meter, and I have never been able to make it work unless I had a 4 watt carrier. If I turn the stryker up, or my dx 979 down it doesn't work. Do I just need a different meter, and if so, what is the best?

put a good meter inline and find out what your actual swr is,, if its ok on am,, just turn off the swr warning on the 955,, its a known issue with these radios along with the anytones and maxlogs, cre radios

Its throwing a carrier down around the 26 mhz range. You'll see a deadkey on a watt meter but ssb reports will be good. The deadkey is on another frequency and the guy on the receiving end doesn't see or hear anything abnormal. Take the bottom cover off and I'll bet it stops. This issue also causes the am waveform to be a little distorted but without a scope you'd never know it.

There have been a few other people on the forums with this same issue. I'd say it's pretty common but most never realize what's happening.

It happened all day yesterday, but it isn't happening today. I guess it could just be an intermittent ground issue. I did get another RadioShack meter today, and it actually works, so I will keep an eye out for the Phantom carrier. Thanks for the info because my search skills were obviously lacking on this one.

It happened again today. I'm thinking ebay might be the easiest fix. I didn't realize that modern radios suck so bad. I may just try a 2950dx and see if those hold up.

Did you ever get a decent external meter? You're going to need one eventually; never trust the built-in meter as more than a relative "go/no go" indication.

I got another radio shack meter, and it actually seems to work correctly. I would love to get a better meter, an analyzer, and other things, but I can't seem to get a radio that works.

I'm just kinda sour because I had high hopes for this 955. I really like it, but intermittent gremlins in electronics can be such a nightmare. I'm really not sure what I should do

I just got off the phone with stryker, and they were extremely helpful. They said they would send out a piece of copper tape along with instructions for instalation. They even requested that I call them back to let them know how it worked out. Thanks 543_Dallas for pointing me in the right direction

Cool. Can you post pics of the copper tape or give a detailed description of the install? I'm curious if it ends up being similar to what I did.

I told him what you did, and he said that might work, and it wouldn't void my warranty if I didn't butcher it. He said it was a copper tape made by 3M that had conductive adhesive. I understood him to say to pop the top off of the shield, stick the tape across the opening, and press the top back on. I think it is fairly common because he acted like he already had an instruction sheet made up with pictures and everything. I soldered the easy corner, and just bridged the other end like you did. I haven't had a problem since doing it, but haven't used it much either. I was planning to update this thread, and post to yours when I get the instructions.
