Swr At 1:3 And Cant Get It Any Better

Always make your ground cables as short as possible. If the antenna is hard mounted to the mast and not isolated from it, then having a ground cable connected at the bottom of the mast would work.

Both i guess, lightning was the main concern, the cable is 6 gage braided copper. 50' long. I left it full length in case i move it higher. Just buried the extra straight out from the tree base into the field. My swr is now perfect on the meter however. What am i supposed to do if its too long? How can I tell if its affecting the antenna performance?
Eta: there is no mast or tower, it's mounted in a tree about 35' or so up.
