i just got a cobra 29 ltd chrome... its been tweaked and modded, and when i key my mic, my SWR goes off the charts. i was wondering if this is because i need a better antenna, or because i dont have my current antenna setup right.
i have a cobra magnetic antenna.

Are you using a external SWR meter? Usally after you get someone in ther with a golden screwdriver the internal SWR meters in radios dont seem to function.

If you read the link I posted above; then you should be able to deal with the this problem.

If the antenna won't tune correctly; then look for a problem with the coax connector.

i finally figured out how to fix this. i have to switch it down to SWR on the s/rf/swr/cal switch and on my talkback, theres a SWR cal on it. i had to turn that way down

What SWR reading are you getting on your external meter?

Be sure that there is no modulation/voice/sound affecting the SWR reading too!

made sure there isint, im using it as a base station... lol

i was gonna get an actual base station, but im not willing to pay over $500 for a CB. lol

think i might need a better antenna, every time i key up the mic (after fixing the high SWR) my ANT light comes on and stays on....

Simply turning the SWR Cal knob on your radio is not going to change the SWR. The ANT light is telling you that you have a problem.

The correct procedure for a Cobra 29 CB Radio would be to turn the microphone gain (Dynamike) all the way down, set the SRF/SWR/CAL switch to the CAL position and key the microphone. Rotate the SWR Cal knob until the needle on the meter lines up with the Cal triangle on the right side of the meter.

Unkey the microphone and set the switch to SWR. Key the microphone again and read the scale on the meter. 2.0 or below is acceptable, 1.5 or lower is good, and anything over 3 can damage your radio.

thanks. it wasnt my dynamike that was causing the problem, i had my RF gain up way too high. got it to where it wont peg the ANT light, and im pushing about 1.2

I'm confused. The RF gain shouldn't affect the swr. RF gain is the gain of the receive not transmit. Maybe it's just me but it makes no difference in my radio if the mic gain,rf gain, rf power,or talk back on it is max or minimum the swr stays the same. Who worked on this radio?

a CB shop by watt road in tennessee... lol

The only thing I can possibly grasp is that someone converted the RF Gain control to variable power.

If, AND ONLY IF, your SWR is an acceptable level (1.2 as you say) which I would also confirm by using an external meter connected between your radio and antenna, you can adjust the sensitivity of the Antenna warning light by adjusting VR6 on the Cobra 29.
