Don't recall every seeing a provider offering a free demonstration of their internet service.

I have an unsecured (well not encrypted at least) wifi signal at my house, I don't give a damn who uses it but it is set up to log everything. So far no problems.

Eastlink Cable has been mandated by an agreement between them and the province of Nova Scotia to provide high speed internet service to the entire province. If they can't provide a cable drop then they must provide a wireless signal. In order to promote this wireless internet capability they have provided limited areas of free access.
