The Mooamar

Hi ONAWHIM, No not really. I was saying that one should give themselves a fancier title other than "Colonel" if you are going to be the dictator of an African country...as in....Colonel Muammar Kadafi. That's his title.

Qaddafi added the title of prime minister in 1970, but gave up this title in 1972. Unlike some other military revolutionaries, Qaddafi did not promote himself to the rank of general upon seizing power, but rather accepted a ceremonial promotion from captain to colonel and has remained at this rank since then. While at odds with Western military ranking for a colonel to rule a country and serve as commander in chief of its military, Qaddafi's has said that Libya's society is "ruled by the people", so he needs no more grandiose title or supreme military rank. So now you know. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muammar_al-Gaddafi#cite_note-SalakLibya-1

Old Qaddafi ,

I remember him trying to flex his so called military might in the early 80's

Gulf of Sidra, South of the island of Malta.

Qaddafi drew a line from two points on the gulf and called it "The line of Death". Told the, U.S if we crossed that line he would blow our vessels out of the water.

The whole friggin battle group went and played in that mud puddle for two weeks.

He scrambled his jets one time, we launched the F-14's and his jets made an immediate U turn and went back to the beach. Nothing else was heard.

Every time I went with a carrier group into the Med past the Straits of Gibraltar we always seemed to steam past that mud puddle.

Thanks for the memories this thread brought back. Cheers

That would be a good one LC. For the benefit of the noobies here, MM43 and GLR are STILL....after all these years...trying to bait and pick on me.

Sigh:confused:

LOL you're boneheaded enough to do this all on your own, all I do is follow your lead and btw how's old kadafi doing these days? still murdering the masses and having guys like yourself make jokes about him.

Left up to me the son of a bitch would meet the same fate as Saddam Hussein

...you keep wanting to bait this into a political discussion which is not allowed on this subforum. maybe one day you will learn to follow the rules here

nothing in the written rules PREVENTS political posting in this section:

"Information, news, nonsense, anything about anything goes here. No controversial topics allowed."

the only things not allowed are "controversial topics ",....... :pop:

Dude, there is a separate Politics, Religion and Controversy Forum down at the bottom. Politics IS a controversial topic matter.

Actually there was more to it than simply turning tail and running. US fighters shot down two Libyan jets on two separate occasions, one in 1981 and again in 1989.

Yes, But the fighters were not from the battle group who was playing in the mud puddle at that time.

I was just clearing things up. Your post made it look like the Libyans turned tail and ran at the first site of F-14's in the air. No harm, no foul, just providing more info. (y)

Past history. This was 1985/86

Achille Lauro Hijacking

Couple articles that may ad some more info on the subject.

The first link is dead and the second refers to the hijacking of the Achille Lauro and the interception of an airliner enroute from Egypt to Tunsia that was carrying the hijackers which had nothing to do with Libya other than flying through Libyan airspace. I'm not sure what this has to do with the topic at hand.

First link works here.

Link explains the Libyan support of the organization involved in both incidents.
