On these radios, do you need the fan kit ?....
And if so, is it easy to put one on the radio yourself ?...
Or is this something a tech has to go inside the radio and install ?..

If you run

alot of AM i would,it will get the mosfets hot.I would rather be safe than sorry, for sure on a $600 radio..For that much i would find a used Yasue or kenwood,im not a fan of Icom. They are a fine radio, just dont like there programing.73 de JW

10-4, well actually I have a Yaesu FT 840, which I have up for sale here in the for sale section of the Amateur radio equipment..

I just have a Tech ticket here and the 10m and some of the 11m band is all Ive talked on with it...and I just cant get interested in the rest of it...
This is why I put it up for sale in the first place..after all the 840 wasnt been used, and instead of boxing it up and letting it set thought Id sale it..

I was the same way,

I was a tech plus for 17 and a half yrs.I realy like 10am now,and up there alot. The last few days though i been on ssb on 10,its been great.I just cant get interestead in 2 mtrs.73 de JW

Yea 10-4, theres just nobody in my area who that I know of that talks on the 10m band....but Ive been down on the other bands just listening to them guys talking out in dx...but since theres none in my area who talks on the 10m band, I just lost interest in it...Ive studied a few times for the General ticket, but I get side lined and stop it, so I just gave up on it....

And I actually like talking dx, just not into talking the local stuff....
And I do spend 99% of my time on the 11m band...talking dx on AM and SSB.
This FT 840, it is a good radio, think the first contact I ever made with my lics was on the 10m band, talked to Fl, Utah, Arizona, Idaho, with it..

It is simple putting on the fan....it uses the existing screws to attach to the back of the radio...and then it plugs into a rca jack....takes about 5min....:)

10-4, I was reading somewhere where it had to be wired to a circuit board inside the radio....
Does it have a plug on the back to plug the cord into the radio...
And the other end plugs into a wall plug ?....

Id like to get one of these radios and get the fan kit a little later...
Due to the cost of the radio and all u know..

The fan plugs right into the back of the radio male/female rca jack...no wiring required. :)

Brand new unit should go for $550 and $50 for the fan kit.

If the FT-840 is in good shape I would keep it if just for a short wave unit. Ten meters is also alive and well, I have talked around the world on a Imax 2000 I am like you I love 11 meters with a great local group. But I can't see spending alot for a CB radio I use a mobile with powersupply. Don't get me wrong bases are great but to much for a mobile with a powersupply.
