This made me laugh...

Will have to check the local CB to VHF Repeater. Was up humming and ah buzzin a few weeks ago. Not bad audio either or coverage. I still think most CB traffic is simplex, right.

During out local Jeep Club runs in the Desert I get a lot questions on the radios and such, as some of those guys are preppers I think. They want to know about Ham Radio and the repeater systems. So I give them a little radio check demo on the local repeater, we got a few repeaters with great coverage out here.

But they understand if we loose power or a significant earth quake we might loose these repeaters. But some repeaters have solar cells and battery back up so its a mixed bag if your counting on radio communications thru a repeater all the time. And using CB Radio is always a great back up for short range stuff.

During the 1971 and 1994 earth quakes in Southern California with power outages Ham and CB radio services were used with great success. CB radio used by many more people for the short run talking worked better than expected. The repeaters mostly on 2 meters broadcast road conditions and fire info, and rebroadcast updates from the State and Local Gov's. And I am sure after all the earth quakes many CB and Ham radios were bought.

It’s like hitting a brick wall the general ignorance (the failure of imagination) of what is CB Radio as to its’ fundamental benefit.

Under conditions not now present,
nothing else offers that which Citizen Band Radio offers when the chips are down.

Service & supply are needed by all.
Intel & Logistics.

First step is a CB Radio. Unless one is somehow blessed by an unending supply of gasoline when the power has gone out one needs accurate, actionable LOCAL information.

solar powered battery systems are quite cheap and reliable.

Granted. But you have to first have it and have worked out any problems. I’m all for it.

To clarify, a CB in a car already has power. Turn the key.

One “wastes” gasoline at idle at approx 1.25-gl/hr. But this is still cheaper than the 3-5/mpg of idling around town (around obstacles of every sort; risking damage also) when a local radio might clear up WHERE to go and WHEN to be there.

Save gasoline for what’s needed. Searches are expensive (fuel use and tire loss).
