Time is now to revive CB Radio

Just a great way to learn America - by the noise it makes over your CB Radio.

While some may complain that there's a lot of skip making a lot of noise...
If is was not for CB radio - Much of the world would not know America, and we would not be Free as we are now.

Being OTR - those noises were much like seeing the lights of a harbor, hearing the bells of the buoys - knowing you are arriving to a port - a destination.

To my ears, it's music of America...

Yessir, there’s poetry in this.

Great post Slowmover. I’m located 7-8 miles South of I-85 near Lexington NC.

Think I’ll start doing that some (y)

I hope to avoid IH-85 most of the time, Charlotte to ATL. Heavy traffic which just kills average mph.

Now I’ll PM ahead if I go that way. See if we both can’t get some good readings from that highway; mile-marker X to mile-marker Y.

I only have black or brown socks, so let me know if that’s a problem (ha!)

I’m so new I’ve only been to two receiving customers so far. I think there’s about thirty (locations) in an arc from Chicago-land down to FL.

Was stuck on IH-95 near St Paul’s, NC a few days. Deliver up north at Halifax, run hard south to Columbia, SC, and then back north to get stuck for Elsa to come through. Load I’m babysitting would have delivered Friday, not Monday.

It's Gary's Armpit that does it for me...

Take a brand new chromed antenna and literally - by simply using / talking on it - see it turn "grey" with tarnish on a foggy morn thru US20 corridor along the lakeshore into Calumet - WOOF - and bring a Clothespin to hide the stench...

A short tew minutes ago came past Dayton, OH and at 0736 EDT heard Cowboy come on-air with:

“Hello drivers, good morning, this is Cowboy with a little traffic & weather for you”

I’ll tell y’all my fears came up about some yokel giving an excuse to hog 19, but that was ill-founded. He had a format:

1). Nice voice
2). Clear signal
3). Briefest description
4). Thoughtful delivery

A). Accident on IH75 at the SB 67 MM.
B). Possibility of rain into Pennsylvania.

— The sum total was a few more sentences to round out likelihood of each. I had the impression he had scanner, laptop. AM traffic radio and TV. Briefer than TV or Radio would be.

Then a warning from CDL-life about a recall on Haldex brake chambers. Locally, a month away from a Safety Week.

But, Cowgirl called him to breakfast and I passed out of range thereafter.

— Could hear plenty of talk stirred up. The layers a W-M DSP reveals.

Plain Talk
No embellishments
Expectation of feedback

A, “Hello, How are Ya”? (with benefits).

His style. His choice of materials. Exceedingly brief. Three subjects of truck driver interest.

Shared interest could be changes to fishing and game laws. Turkey Shoot at the VFW over Labor Day. Etc. Truck drivers are just guys at work, no special CB “rules” apply just because one is on AM-19.

Glad to have heard him with this thread subject fresh.

— The assumption of a friendly reception.

— Plenty of locals wanting to know what flavor of preserves this morning.

This is Ohio. Conditions vary large or small over the range of Who, What, When in the rest of the country.

Radio Operator Choice.

One needn’t be weather or traffic guru, but it can’t hurt IF something big is happening (fatality accident on highway; heavy hail in eastern half of county).

If the aspect of being a resource is appealing (it needn’t be), then be assured drivers WON’T mind a local interpreting a moving weather map OR if multiple agencies are answering a call about downed power lines at X & Y intersection.

If it works as an excuse to get that base station onto AM-19 then it’s GTG.

I will say I’ve heard base operators try for open-ended WHATCHA GOT? and it falls flat. Silence, mostly, unless a regular is nearby. So, MAYBE, offer a little something.

RADIO CHECKS would be big, IMO. Most radios sound 60-80% “good”. Some, horrible. Helped a guy as I was getting past St Louis yesterday on IH-255 get Echo backed off and Mic Gain turned down PLUS Talkback turned off.

Said he’d been trying for feedback for two days to dial in radio.

Everyone loves a compliment. Get their handle and ask them to holler next time thru as I’ve said before.

Some local concerns (or just local flavor) and a little radio tuning time. IMO, that’s an hour or more right there.

After awhile of practice one would learn what questions elicit good responses. What’s it like on the road today? (without being that direct).

A Practical Reason for CB REVIVAL

For who knows what’ll come down that road? Maybe sooner than later.

So, you, an old cowpoke out for a his daily ride, stopped atop the ridge to take things in (AM-19) . . .

. . and one of the outriders give the heads-up, that, the Devils Herd this way comes.

He remembers you. Too late for his, but maybe not for yours.

Won’t be the anti-christ-phone bleeping, nor the TV and the Radio Emergency Alert System interrupting “programming”.

But you can bet the road will be wide awake, as they are now on their own and scattering ahead of the stampede.

Alone as are you . and yours. A day some dread, but many more will be glad that the wait is now over.

What’s on local radio is close to reality.
Right outside your front door.

“Drama” ain’t the point except to highlight possibility.

It’s in listening to what’s on men’s minds and in their hearts. And, with the reach and clarity of a base station, BE the headland beacon.

IMO.

Snuck into the Buckeye Slo? I get down around Dayton every once in a bit. Have to keep an eye out?

Back to work Aug, 2nd!

Got stuck at Beaverdam after a washout. Nice day to be in Ohio. IH-75 a stones throw away. Then tomorrow run east on US-30; am looking forward to that.

No lack of radio chatter on AM-19.

Have a Texas truck driver friend going back to work on 8/2. Rotator cuff surgery sidelined him. He says he’s feeling good now, and here’s to hoping you’re well-mended.

The funny thing about coming north are the drivers who get bent some other driver acts wrong. I guess the invasion hasn’t worked it’s way here yet.

Expecting the “paperwork Americans” to act right or “return the favor” of being polite is wasted energy.

US30 is a nice ride till you get over by Mansfield, OH. Kinda sucks through there with construction, etc. If you're grabbing I71 you're good to go! If you're going past 71 towards I77 there's usually plenty of "protection"!
Be safe!

30 east of I-71 isn't too bad a road, Slow. Ran it many times over to Canton and back from Findlay. Just mind your foot in those 60mph zones, they like their big truck revenue along in through there.

to answer the question that was originally asked in this post ... I've been making videos for Youtube making sure that people know that CB radio is not dead , and to help those that are new to CB find good equipment , and learn more about CB radio . I'm not sure if posting the link is allowed , and I've been a member here many years ... and I like hanging out here . So I won't post the link without permission . You can see on my avatar for the forum , it's Raccoon's Radio Ranch .
