I'm really against the fence about dropping the wattage from 5 to 2. 1/2 watts in order to run an amp. This uniden Madison is so cherry inside and out. No modifications whatsoever. I would really like to keep it that way but I do want to run an amp with it. I'm still having a hard time believing that 5 watts is considered over driving but the proof is in the pudding. It was running ok with a 2 1/2 watt radio but stopped working after two days of keying it with a 5 watt rig. I own sseveral other amps and will see if at least one of them can be driven safety with 5 watts.. I've ordered a uniden Madison service manual, so if I do decide to lower it I know exactly how to do that. Thanks to the people who informed me of the VR10 am and VR11 ssb.pots that are used too adjust the wattage on a uniden Madison.

20 watts would be under drive for some very nice amps like the Texas Stars. Consider installing a RFX150. You can't hurt it with the low drive you have.

Tall man I just want to make sure that you know that the amp I'm referring to is a Palomar 500 base amplifier with a 35 amp 12 volt power supply built into it. I watched a YouTube video last night of s guy doing a demo on that very amplifier. I was shocked when he said he was driving the amp with 30 watts. I thought I May have been hearing wrong so, i watched it again and sure enough he was driving the amp with 30 watts. I'm not sure if he ment 30 watts dead key or he was counting for swing but either way he had to be driving it with arbout 15 watts dead key.. One other thing I should mention is that when i wss using the amp (5 watt driver) the on air reports were excellent. None of that overdrive amp audio. On the contrary people who I speak to daily with another radio and amp couldn't believe I was running one of those Palomar's that thay thought were a piece of junk. I actually own two and a few of the people I was talking to asked if I would sell them one.

I own four Palomar amps and they are all tube units. Three mobile and one base. I get good reports on those amps all the time. Is your amp tube or transistor? Now I can check for the schematic on your Palomar 500. Be sure you check your radio and make sure it's working right.

I've heard this several times, with yet a reasonable answer. In the late 60's, I ran a Contex 500 with a Tram Titan ll (5watt), nobody I knew of then was running 21/2 watt radio. You hooked it up and peaked and talked all over the world. I believe the transistor phase has had a big impact on the RF world. Times have changed everything today. JMHO, everone have a good day and 3's to you/yours.
