Unbuilt Heathkit SB-1000

Ridiculous Cost! When you consider AL-80B same basic circuit and can be purchased for less w/ warranty.
First if purchased to build, would be to throughout all the caps and diodes in power supply buy new. That cost is close to $200 for those parts and upgrade boards.
Some of these guys are delusional what they think that stuff is worth!

Another issue is the EIMAC 3-500z tube. Some of the last several batches of Eimac's that were produced around that time had the potential to be "gassy" right out of the box.
Some of those Heathkit amps at that time had those tubes.
Eimac soon after the huge batch of warranty claims, cease to produce 3-500z tubes.
(late 80's early 90's I think ?)
So potential to build that kit could lead to even more expensive cost if the tube were bad also.
The SB-1000 amps also had cooling issues. (not enough airflow to the base of the tube).
This caused the solder on the filament pins to run hot and actually melt the solder out the bottom of the pins.
This issue normally occurred when the amp was operated near full output for a long duration, or in AM service above rated duty cycle. ( @ 900-1000 watts PEP output)
The SB-1000 /AL-80 A (B) are GOOD amps but reality shows they are best operated around 700 watts PEP output.
All the Best

Makes me wonder if the always-suicidal power transformer has good miles on it yet, or if age alone is what makes them go bad. Would love to hear how long the transformer lasted after this thing gets built and put into harness.

I have one of these that we rebuilt with a new Ameritron AL80B transformer. And another one with the original in it. I'm hesitant to sell the thing. Murphy's Law says the transformer will flame out before the buyer has it for a week.

Just don't need the aggravation.
