Troops begin combat operations in New Orleans to fight 'insurgents'

Army Times | September 4 2005
By Joseph R. Chenelly

NEW ORLEANS — Combat operations are underway on the streets “to take this city back” in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

“This place is going to look like Little Somalia,” Brig. Gen. Gary Jones, commander of the Louisiana National Guard's Joint Task Force told Army Times Friday as hundreds of armed troops under his charge prepared to launch a massive citywide security mission from a staging area outside the Louisiana Superdome. “We're going to go out and take this city back. This will be a combat operation to get this city under control.”

Jones said the military first needs to establish security throughout the city. Military and police officials have said there are several large areas of the city are in a full state of anarchy.

Dozens of military trucks and up-armored Humvees left the staging area just after 11 a.m. Friday, while hundreds more troops arrived at the same staging area in the city via Black Hawk and Chinook helicopters.

“We're here to do whatever they need us to do,” Sgt. 1st Class Ron Dixon, of the Oklahoma National Guard's 1345th Transportation Company. “We packed to stay as long as it takes.”

While some fight the insurgency in the city, other carry on with rescue and evacuation operations. Helicopters are still pulling hundreds of stranded people from rooftops of flooded homes.

Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and police helicopters filled the city sky Friday morning. Most had armed soldiers manning the doors. According to Petty Officer 3rd Class Jeremy Grishamn, a spokesman for the amphibious assault ship Bataan, the vessel kept its helicopters at sea Thursday night after several military helicopters reported being shot at from the ground.

Numerous soldiers also told Army Times that they have been shot at by armed civilians in New Orleans. Spokesmen for the Joint Task Force Headquarters at the Superdome were unaware of any servicemen being wounded in the streets, although one soldier is recovering from a gunshot wound sustained during a struggle with a civilian in the dome Wednesday night.

“I never thought that at a National Guardsman I would be shot at by other Americans,” said Spc. Philip Baccus of the 527th Engineer Battalion. “And I never thought I'd have to carry a rifle when on a hurricane relief mission. This is a disgrace.”

Spc. Cliff Ferguson of the 527th Engineer Battalion pointed out that he knows there are plenty of decent people in New Orleans, but he said it is hard to stay motivated considering the circumstances.

“This is making a lot of us think about not reenlisting.” Ferguson said. “You have to think about whether it is worth risking your neck for someone who will turn around and shoot at you. We didn't come here to fight a war. We came here to help."

It is unbelieveable that our soldiers are being fired upon by the same people they're there to help. I say show no mercy on crooks, thieves, and murderers! It's one thing to steal food if you're hungry but you can't eat a tv, guns, etc.. Those taking advantage of this tragedy should be dealt with severely!

Yes by all means! WHAT WE NEED NOW IS MARTIAL LAW DECLARED NATION WIDE AND THE US CONSTITUTION SUSPENDED. ALL US CITIZENS TREATED AS INSURGENTS, THE ENEMY, TERRORISTS.
Like I said - UNFRICKINGBELIEVABLE. With AmeriKan citizens like you, we need not worry about losing our sovereignty and freedoms and liberties.

Lonewolf,it is one thing to use the military to suppress the masses and a completely differant thing to use it to reinstate law and order. When the hospitals have to move patients to floors higher up,not because of flood waters but because they are being overrun by armed hoodlums looking for drugs, then it is time to do what has to be done. When construction and repair contractors come under sniper fire while under police escort something has to be done. When rescue helicopters come under fire something has to be done.If the police can't do it then who will? Do you think all this is just another government plot and lies to justify using the army to take away your rights?

Do any military members of this forum feel these kinds of statements demeaning when conspiracy theorists cry day and night you are eager to take over our nation ?

As an ex-soldier I will say this every soldier I ever served with WITHOUT exception has answered the question "If ever I were called on by my country to suppress it's freedom WOULD I ?" with a RESOUNDING NO!! NEVER!!!!! And let me say i have posed this question to ALOT of troops.

Chuck

P.S. No i don't find it demeaning at all I HAVE put myself in harms way to secure their right to think and express themselves FREELY and would NEVER want them to think I didn't mean it when I did it :)

I have said it before, and I will say it again,,,,,,,,,

KEEP YOUR GUNS AND YOUR AMMO CLOSE!!!!

When times are tough you MUST DEFEND YOURSELF

When I was in a tornado that hit Plainfield IL 14 years ago I did not allow ANYONE near my house,,,, I made my weapons and my intent VERY WELL KNOWN!!!

I AGREE THE MILITARY NEEDS TO GO IN FULL ARMS ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

AND WHILE THEY ARE AT IT TAKE A FEW "backyard snipers" OUT!!

Police shot and killed at least five people Sunday after gunmen opened fire on contractors crossing a bridge to make levee repairs, The Associated Press reported.

GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Deputy Police Chief W.J. Riley told AP that police shot at eight people who had guns, killing five or six.
GOOD!!!!!!

I understand you have helped fight for their rights to express themselves but that is not to say you may not feel insulted by the accusations against the people of our military.

hey All...

Let us remember these are desprite times for many many of our fellow countrymen..

I applaud our troups going to help..
I am sure they do not like being shot at..
it is very unfortunate that help has been so long and i am sure they are so frustrated that many are simply doing the wrong thing no longer being in a Proper State of mind..

If i were there you could Damm well be sure if any looting was tried to be done Aginst me i would be in a position to not allow it..

these in need are 100 % in their rights to loot needed food and water and meds....(but not stealing it from other people)..

our military has been given not just the job of rescue (and i know Damm well they are Proud to Help)..
but to also break up the Anarcy that has taken hold..
to return things to civil ways..

I do not Envy the Job ahead of them..
I hope they are able to help those in dire need..
as well as hope the area to recover by being drained and repaired..
I hope that they do not need to defend themselves against harm from those who have slipped into hopeless Anarcy..

i think it times such as this that the military will do a better job then civilian peice keepers..
for as many of the soldiers have said..
not even war zones are anywhere as bad as our devistated flood areas..

Let us all PRAY for a quick return to our American way of life

yes Keep you GUNS and AMMO close Happy Hammer

and Lone Wolf
although i agree many of our rights are in jeperdy
do not take martial law in areas so badly affected as same as lossing our rights....in this case it is the sad case that it is needed to help Presearve our way of life..
do you think for a second
that if someone comes crawling out of their home at 10 pm (past 7 pm curfu) asking for help while gasping for brethe with broken leg and or arms..
that our military would shot a unarmed un threatning individual..

Lone Wolf i agree we as a nation need to keep our rights from being taken away..
but be more sensible in how you give examples of how they are disappearing...your argument in this case is
Flawed as well as Ignorate..(dont take it the wrong way)

Pray for those in need

I am typing this with a heavy heart   ..We as a country need to pull together at this time, not "Cry Wolf".
My family is in the "Guard" loop ,sister and husband are both in ,so one weekend a month I gain an extra child and with todays headlines what if he questions why people in this country want to shoot his Dad or the other guys in his shop??...Scary thing is ,how do I answer him.?? He has never asked about the overseas missions, his parents can explain world conflicts to a point but FELLOW Americans shooting at their relief help???

We were in Florida after Homestead got hit BUT this is much worse and the last thing we need is anarchy or "DAM# political" agendas.....What we need is folks to Put Up or SHUT UP....Help your neighbor, whether it be next door ,next state or the "Gulf Coast"....
PLEASE DO NOT BELIEVE EVERYTHING ON THE TV.....we know how they pick elections or destroy people without the proven
facts.....Let us do what we do best,HELP.....we either roll up our sleeves or open our wallets....That is what makes this great country the envy of all others....

Then we kick back and give a prayer , a Thank you (or both) to those "Civilian" and Full time enlisted military folks that put it on the line for U.S..... ;)

Snoope back quiet

Yea, with people like you we would lose everything! Is your real name Hawk from 1stop?

Understand that martial law is a temporary tool (and I might add a verry efective one) that is intended to help lawenforcement decern between the "good guys" and the bad.
If you feel that your rights are more important than everyone elses then break the rules, BUT undersand that by doing so YOU put YOURSELF at risk of being identified as sometthing other than a 'good guy" And YOU will have NOONE butt YOU to blame.

I'm terribley sorry but, you don't send combat hardened troops fresh from the war in Iraq, with orders of SHOOT TO KILL to do "battle" with fellow citizens on our own soil, (yes I know not all the military folks sent to put down the "insurgents" are fresh off the grounds in Iraq). A few scattered roving gangs of punks running around reacking havoc on their fellow Americans is not justification for this. It sets a very dangerous precident - and if you don't get my drift about the "very dangerous precident", then you wouldn't understand anyway. This whole scenario playing out in LA. is one of the main reasons the Whores in DC will never get my guns without a fight to the death, plain and simple. On another note, do you see the way these morons are calling the looters in LA. 'INSURGENTS', now this is to me UNFRICKINGBELIEVABLE...
Maybe my head is not buried in the sand far enough, or I'm not enough of one of the sheeple/cattle to not question things???
