Once you have the radio set up as you want it,you really don't need to mess with the menu. About the only menu setting I use is the day/night setting. It took a little while to get accustomed to the radio, but it is a great little radio matched up with a RM Italy 203. Nice clean audio and stable on sideband. The weather band is nice to have as well.

This is the only thing I don't care for, when on the road I like to have a fully adjustable RF gain knob at my fingertips and going into menus and such just doesn't cut it. If they could find a way for the clarifier to revert to RF gain in AM mode it would be much more attractive to me.

I do like the 880.
What I do for RF gain is preset the Local RF gain setting to about half scale or whatever you prefer. The Local RF gain is the only one adjustable.

This why you can quickly toggle the RF gain switch between the full on RF gain to an attenuated RF gain much easier and the radio's LCD display gives a visual indicator showing which RF gain mode is in use.

Try this if you haven't already.

Lescomm said he has 6 radios left and will not be able to get more so if it is fake he is trying to raise his price to get all the tax time money he can. good plot on his part. some guy's that wont one will buy thinking they are gone.

The posters who think the 980 is a good radio would piss their pants if they started using a pre 1998 side mic Grant XL or Cobra 148. LOL
The 980 is meek on transmit and unimpressive on receive.

Does a pre 1998 Uniden Grant Count? Cause I got one of them. AND I still really like the 980. The 980 may be weak power wise, however I get great audio from the stock mic or a RF Limited 2018.

Hi,

UT, as you probably know, I bought an Italian KL203 to go with mine. (980)

I heard some guys talking about the amp you mentioned and they were using that.

Seems the 980 is a great "head unit" for an amp!

I did the "old school" - "new-school", radio flip flop, looking at Grant XL's and the 980, back and forth!

Finally got the 980 and the little KL203 amp!

Seems power is the ONLY downside I have heard of, and is easily fixed!

I got mine to swing to 12 watts on side ssb and have a 4 watt dead key on a.m.. use a quality power mic and it works very well with either a texas star 350 hdv or any of several palomars .. I am not proud but wanted to see if the gutlass wonder was good for anything besides a weather radio...very stable on ssb and get good reports ...

some guy's are doing a cap resister mod like on a cobra 29 and they are saying it wakes the radio up alot after some tuning and the mod. gives a 2 watt dead key and full swing with good audio from what they are saying.

Thanks for the suggestion but for the way I run a radio a fully adjustable RF gain ready to go is pretty important, work it just right along with the volume knob and it seems to give an improvement in signal to noise. The clarifier knob on the 980 is used for RF gain on the 880 so it does have a dedicated RF gain control, but that don't help much if you need SSB.

that's why I have 2 well tuned 2950's for the serious stuff .. I agree with you completely...
