Uniden 980 SSB - crowdsource the frequency mod?

I don't see that happening regardless. The 980 has been discontinued and was plagued with display issues. There is no money in it even if Mark decided to make them again much less someone else purchase the rights to the work and then try it. There just is no cheap, easy, marketable channel mod for this radio.

I am sure Uniden cranked these things out so there is plenty of NOS sitting around. That's probably how they do warranty work too, if it can't be fixed in 5 minutes or less a new radio is sent out.
