I am thinking about using one of my mobile radios indoors. Would one of those Amazon/ ebay regulated 12vdc 50A 600W PSU work? Like a 50A version of this perhaps? I think I'll enjoy the experience more than being in the truck.

Url wouldn't link, sorry. Item description;

PowerMax PM3-55 110 V to 12 V DC Power Supply Converter Charger for Rv Pm3-55, 55Amp
  • 13.2 Vdc range
  • 13.6 Vdc range
  • 14.4 Vdc range
  • Ul and cul approved
  • Reverse battery protection

The radio in question is an RCI2970N4, 40A according to the user manual.

I guess all that ( lol ) is needed next is a home made dipole antenna somewhere discreet and up hign .

Did you do any searches for it? A lot of power supplies have major noise issues. I just got a 50 amp megawatt because the reviews are good other than fan noise, and you can link several together to get more power if you ever need it. Not saying it is the best, but I know it isn't bad.

Actually kinda handy that you can add more for more power. My whole station peaks at around 48 amps, so it could probably use another if I was a long winded ham.

Probably noisey, but as long as you can return it you could give it a go if you are a gambling man. If you can't afford a 955hp, or an rci, I can understand that you can't spare to feed them good clean power either.

The day an age of spending more and getting better quality finished a long time ago. My understanding is, you spend more thinking you got better quality, whereas in reality it was just the same item from the same factory.

Get a 50A MegaWatt supply or even 2. This way you have 100 solid amps of power and plenty of headroom for adding other things!! For the money, warranty, and customer service, you can't go wrong with the MegaWatt power supplies. No hash, amd built well for what they are. I have the S400-12 and have had it for 3yrs now. Ran it a lot for days on end. Never have had an issue with it still to this day. Clean the fan out every so often, and that is about it. It just works. And it powers my HF radio just fine. I would stay away from the Meanwell power supplies myself. For about $240, you can have 100 amps of power. For $120, 50amps. The 2970N2 should be fine with a 50a supply. I normally try to get a power supply that is. 1.5 times more amperage then I need. If your drawing 40 amps, you should be fine with the 50 amp supply. But it never hurts to have more than you need. Again, JMHO's. Just make sure you research a lot before you buy one. And stay away from the China knockoffs too. They are noisey from what I've heard. Have a good one. And good luck with whatever you choose. Have fun!!

That unit is intended as a power supply/battery charger for an RV to run on-board 12 volts gear like lights, refrigerator, etc. Most of them are rather noisy RF wise.
