Variable power switch

Best option IMO is to use an existing switch like the CB/PA switch for a dual level power control.
both levels are adjustable from inside the radio, and really, how many different power levels do you actually use?
in my experience, people tend to use two different power levels most often.

and sp5it, isn't it Barbarism? LOL

Bingo! You have a "barefoot" setting and one used to drive an amplifier. Why have to look at a watt meter to dial in specific levels each time you change, when a simple switch can place two different potentiometers into the circuit, that are set at your two required levels?

This also prevents people from clogging ears on the air, as they set a carrier level.

A miniature switch like 1iwilly posted, but with a LED lighted tip, red on green off. That would nice addition, but nobody makes them, at least that I've been able to find. Only in the large variety.

Is this for a base or mobile setup? The reason i ask is, years ago I was into the "imma be different" stage and built an external box (acquired from RS) with my variable power, roger beep/noise toy in it and had the wires run into the back of the radio through a factory slot. The box was velcroed to the radio and didn't take up any real space.... Just throwing that out there as a possible option to add your stuff w/o modifying the radio case or losing stock functions.
