Varmint XL-1000, Smoked Transformers?

I recently picked up this Varmint XL-1000 amplifier, the transformers are covered in a tar like substance, I hope it's not the varnish from the windings!
I even see some wires coated with this gunk/tar!
Have you ever seen this kind of gunk before?
What do you think?

I'm going to try to disconnect a few things and I've got put a fuse in it to eventually see if I can measure some taps or Ohm out some windings.
It's got some nice n' heavy iron in there, just hope I don't have to rewind it!

Yeah I'm in over my head on this one. It looks like Bar-B-Q, none of the other Varmint amps I've seen online appear to have this goop on them, but I "like to swim" anyways, what better way to learn?
