vhf uhf base antenna

It sounds like a variation of the regular J-Pole and is likely made from ladderline. The maker claims a gain of 6 dB over a rubber duck which is not really saying a whole lot. Not like this guy on eham: "I used to use a 13 element yagi for 2 meters but now I don't have to think about rotating my antenna.
Thanks Ed, your students are doing a great job
building and tuning these antennas."

That really makes it sound like he thinks it has the same kind of gain as his 13 element yagi. I would think the 13 element probably gets out nearly as good on the rear as the omni does if it is only 6dB over a duckie antenna.

I also have a 2 meter/440 j pole, and the SWR on 440 is....less than wonderful.
It will work on 440, but not great.
I now use it to listen on 440 and use the Yagi when I want to talk.....world of difference.

Just something to keep in mind.

That 2 meter 'J'-pole use on 440 isn't gong to be the best in the world, granted. But, it will certainly beat the use of a typical rubberduck on a hand-held radio. Don't just go by the gain figures, take into consideration that the 'J'-pole is going to be much higher than the typical rubberduck at shoulder level. That height alone should make a noticeable difference, and would be easier than shinnying up a pole to get that rubberduck to the same height, right? So while that 'J'-pole wouldn't be the 'ideal' antenna for 440, it'll certainly 'do' till you can build/buy one.
And then you also have the option of a combination 2 meter, 70 cm 'J'-pole. 'Arrow' makes a very nice and cheap one. It isn't the 'ideal' antenna, but it certainly works. The one thing that would help more than anything else is antenna height.
