Just something to keep in mind.
That 2 meter 'J'-pole use on 440 isn't gong to be the best in the world, granted. But, it will certainly beat the use of a typical rubberduck on a hand-held radio. Don't just go by the gain figures, take into consideration that the 'J'-pole is going to be much higher than the typical rubberduck at shoulder level. That height alone should make a noticeable difference, and would be easier than shinnying up a pole to get that rubberduck to the same height, right? So while that 'J'-pole wouldn't be the 'ideal' antenna for 440, it'll certainly 'do' till you can build/buy one.
And then you also have the option of a combination 2 meter, 70 cm 'J'-pole. 'Arrow' makes a very nice and cheap one. It isn't the 'ideal' antenna, but it certainly works. The one thing that would help more than anything else is antenna height.
