This is where I studied on.

Between looking up subjects and info using Google that I didn't understand, I passed my tests. Neither site cost you anything to use, so give them a bash.
If you aren't a member of this site, it only takes a few minutes to join and cost you nothing. You can ask any questions here on this site, and get lots of answers and links to help you along.

yup, the qrz tests are how i passed. i kept taking them until i was getting a 90-95 average and then took the test. ended up with a 100 on the actual test. :w00t:

And the question is... do you just want to pass the test, or do you want to know what you are doing, and why? I mean, those test cover some very basic things about building electronics, radios, because the license says you can do that. They cover safety things sot that you don't kill you self doing that. And they cover rules/regulations on what you can/can't do to keep from harming someone else.

That's what I was thining while reading this thread. I purchased a study guide (Gordon West) and READ the guide BEFORE going to QRZ for the practice tests. This method allowed me to ace both my Tech & General exams with ease. I got a better understanding of the hows and whys to the correct answers - which are APPLIED daily not only in my operations, but also in how I constructed my shack. I am currently reading the Extra guide and will then go take the practice exams prior to upgrading next month. IMO you are cheating YOURSELF by simply memorizing the answers but not having a clue as to WHY they are the correct answers...

Agreed 100%. Personally I do not think the question pool should be published.Practice tests are OK I guess but back when I went to school if we got a copy of the questions that would be asked on an exam it was called cheating. Nowadays it's called passing with flying colours. It is quite evident of the amount of memorizing that is going on today versus actually learning. All one has to do is look at the Q&A section on qrz.com and see what kind of questions are being asked. Five or ten years ago you would almost never see a question asked about how to make a dipole or if it's alright to connect two radios together with a tee connector. Today we see "extras" asking those questions that a novice of 20 years ago would have known better than to ask. Some of my favourite questions asked involve legal limit+ amplifiers and how to hook them up and tune them and whether or not the tuner goes before of after the amp.

PASSED

Hi, I'm new here. Dave from SW Virginia waiting for back ordered delivery of my VX-8R radio from Universal Radio. So I thought I'd give the test a whirl. Wow, I'm amazed...I passed. I have very little knowledge of HAM Radio and was getting a little HT just to listen and maybe talk in an emergency if I was needed. This is amazing. I never even cracked a book.

Now I think I may go for a beginners license. Most of the questions were standard stuff. I failed all questions that had centimeters in them because I don't know anything about cm dealing with frequencies. The one that hurt most was the vanity call sign program. Of course I answered "no such thing".

Thanks for posting and giving me confidence to get with the program and try for a license. Who knows, I may end up like the guy with 88 antennas on his car. Dave

The stuff below is free and is about 90% of what you need to pass the exams, experience helps too...

Also, its free and you don't need to fight the crowds...

These Neets publications will help with the theory missing from just memorizing the exam question and answers:

And this link will answer the regulation parts:

2002 CFR Title 47, Volume 5
