They USED to be cheap to shoot. EXPENSIVE to buy but cheap to shoot.

A budget minded shooter who wants a semi auto rifle would be better off with an AK-47. Ammo is crazy expensive right now, but during sane and reasonable times, one can get ammo for about $0.15 per round. A decent rifle will run about $350. Again, during sane and reasonable times.

They won't look as cool as an AR with 6 grand worth of attachments hanging off it, but you'll still be shooting when it AR guy runs out of ammo.
