What do you think of Baofeng?

Can be beat for the price.....I use a mag mount antenna as a mobile. Works well quality is great....battery life is very good. What not to like for 40.00

Concerning Baofeng...

I had the UV5R and UV5R Plus.

Now I have the UV-82L. So far, it's my favorite of the bunch.

Just going back over this thread because I managed to forget my UV-5R+ "somewhere". m42duster, what's your reason for liking the 82L over the others? I want to buy a replacement for the Plus unit I lost. Sure would be pissed at myself if it was an Icom/Yaesu/Kenwood/Alinco/Wouxon...etc.

And will it talk 90 miles on simplex?

Just ordered one of the UV-82's after stumbling across this site:

Compare BaoFeng Radios and their Differences - BaoFeng Tech

Really lays out the differences (or lack of) between all the UV-5 variants and the rest of their Baofeng cousins.

May consider getting the "X" version if I like this one enough. It would be nice to have access to 220 which I don't currently have. My UV-82 will be here next Tuesday... $36.31 with free shipping, guaranteed by Amazon. Really? Wow!

Hard to believe, but I received the Baofeng TODAY. Man, that's fast, and I used the free shipping. Too bad I can't find my stupid cable to program it with!

Back to back radio check with my UV-5R and UV-82... "the 82 sounds "fuller" than the UV-5R. Not that the UV-5R is tinny, it's just higher pitched audio. The UV-82 sounds much better". On the receive end, the 82 certainly has a louder speaker, which is nice. The antenna seems a little better than the stocker on the UV-5R. Switching to a Nagoya 771 took me from 2 S units to 3 and a half in simplex mode. Pretty good improvement there, I'd say. Really liking this little HT so far... the buttons are bigger and it fits in my hand more comfortably. And for 36 bucks, well, you know. :)

I stumbled on 2 UV82L's in the box with everything but 1 manual was missing. The guy bought em to try out, didn't like em & boxed back up. Then he decided to bring em to Dayton Hamvention to sell. I paid a whopping $40 for the pair!! I intended to buy 1 anyways, but WTH, 2 for 1? I think so!! 8-)
