I stopped by today on a garage sale and I found some ham radio treasure from ft-920, al811, low pass filters, Alonzo dr140t, microphones, whole different bands/antennas, balun kits, amp tubes, antenna rotors, antenna books cubical quad arrr antenna books from 1974, and more.

Only things i ever got from yard/garage sale reasonably was 2 crescent wrenches,like new 12 "+8" and 3 new 5 gallon gas cans for $7.00.
And when my brother n i used to paint machines,we would go to those sales n buy clothes made of soft material. 1 sale was funny we snatched up maybe 20 dresses n lady asked why we buy dresses? We replied grease rags. She got offensive. We said if we said we are crosdressers would that changed your mind?
Her husband was behind her n bout hit floor laughin n said pay up guys thank you for haulin thic crap away

there are about a million uses for a grid dip meter, but ive never owned one.
I really want one now though!

from what i understand back in the day they were a radio op's best friend and helped tune antennas, circuits, guitars, Everything!

definitely find a tutorial on how to use it, im sure it will be very cool.

Not sure of the "kit" but they also call them Grid Dip Oscillators - cool little gadget. Helps you see what the resonant frequency of tank circuits are, without having to "tap into it" and load the circuit - these work by proximity - and when you are close to their "natural resonance" - the circuit it's testing - absorbs the field energy these thing generate - very readily.

They come in Tube type (requiring a cumbersome battery) or FET/Transistorized...like below...

So you see your tool transmitting, sending out a signal - the you bring it close to the tank circuit or tuned circuit you want to find resonance of - you tune in and around the frequency of interest vias a dial on the tuner and watch it's scale "drop" or dip -- you'll see the needle drop down - because that signal energy is coupling to the tank circuit you're "sniffing".

Since it's a variable frequency oscillator - they have "ranges" they use a coil a lot like an emitter - so the coil has a given range of frequency it uses, so the tool has various tuned coil/cap combinations and they are calibrated to the meter and dial so you can get a pretty good idea as to what the resonant frequency of the circuit is.

you're a pretty lucky guy, you don't find these tools or this level of quality often at a Garage sale - good find.
