What is with the fog light craze in this country?

Idiots running their fog lights any time their headlights are on. Are people that oblivious to the fact that they are annoying........I turn my high beams on anytime some oncoming idiot has them on.
The Sheriff's Dept started cracking down on that but it still goes on.
I am sorry auto manufacturers started putting fog lights in most cars and trucks nowadays.
I installed a dash cam because drivers in Florida are among the worst in the country.
 

Fog lights should not be bothersome at all since they are only on with low beams and are actually aimed lower than low beams are. Now DRIVING lights that are on with the high beams are a different story. I find that when I meet those drivers they tend to dim quickly after I hit them with my LED light bar mounted on the front bumper of my truck. :D

Fog lights are annoying and illegal in clear conditions......a great many of them are indeed misaimed. I claim a victory when the oncoming car's sun visor comes down.
A friend of mine issued 20 citations last night alone LOL.
To paraphrase Donald Trump........New York is not sending the best people to Florida, it's sending ghetto punks, thugs, and drivers who are almost as bad as Russian drivers.
 
I have fog lights on my Goldwing and I have turned them on only once for testing on a country road. Nice and bright but aimed low to the pavement just like fog lights need to be. Lights up the road side nicely to spot the errant BAMBIE'S, I guess it will work good in the fog if I am ever caught out in the fog.

the aux/fog lights is a phase going on here in florida just like train horns and before that thumping stereos, and before that wheel spinners, and before that cars that lit up under neath and so on and so on,,,,,,the trouble is they are not being hooked up right,, they hook up to what ever power they can get too and throw the relay that is supposed to hook up with the bright or dim lights away,,,,,
 
That and majority of the time they aren't used for "fog". I know what you speak of psycho, I have seen them used at night as well ok larger trucks with no headlights. Just the darn fog lights mounted on the bumper looking you right in the face as they are on coming!! That seems to be the biggest issue. But bottom line is they really don't need to be used unless needed. They are not driving lights and the a lot of the ones bought at the auto parts store and installed say right on the package they are not for street use. For Off Road Use Only. As they put it. Just my 2 pennies worth on that. And yes I have them on my car, but they only get used when they are needed. Foggy mornings where it's hard to see close in front of you. Lots of joggers here. Anyway. I am one who generally leave my "Driving lights" on. Some MFG's call them that. I see the road better with them on then I do off. I have seen them from another car and they are not blinding at all and I do like the look. :)
 
My F-150 has driving lights that illuminate the road between the bumper and where the headlight start 10 or 20 feet out and more off the side of the road for poor visibility conditions. They are not the super bright LED or blue tinted retina burners these idiots install that are probably illegal everywhere.. I remember the old yellow fog lights from years back people use to bolt onto their front bumpers.

Funny thing is high intensity light aimed high into fog where it could affect oncoming drivers only cause more loss of visibility due to the light reflecting back from the water particle's. Less light aimed lower is better in fog and rain....hence "driving lights:..

I agree except that by definition fog lights are short range short focus lights while driving lights are meant to illuminate further down the road than high beams normally do. Sure you are driving with either type of lights but true driving lights are meant to extend your range while fog lights are meant to be used to reduce reflected light off the water droplets. I also remember the old yellow fog lights but haven't seen them for year and years.
 
I saw a lot of goofy stuff while I lived in Florida. The no inspection rule contributes to this. Train horns, especially. I always equate train horns with the same bubba's that think "rolling coal" is cool. (It's not).

As far as fog lights go, I haven't seen it get crazy in Texas... mainly because either the local PD or the HP are going to pull you over and give you a ticket. Many years ago, I had a set of halogen driving lights on my old '69 Beetle. The only time I used them was late at night on two lane, back country roads. I had them aimed out towards the sides of the road so I could see cattle, deer, coyotes, bobcats, and raccoons, and not run into them. And if I saw headlights coming from the other direction, I always dimmed them.

Yup. Many years ago I used to have a set of Bosch driving lights on my car. I replaced the bulbs with 100 watt Phillips bulbs. At the time only 55 watt were street legal. I had them properly wired so they went off when I dimmed my headlights or they could be off altogether. One dark rainy night I rounded a curve and right in front of me was a police checkpoint and I was the only car approaching it. I quickly dimmed my lights and as I rolled up to a stop the officer said " Man that's a mean set of lights you have on this thing" and knelt down for a closer look. I thought for sure I was in doo doo. Then he asked me what brand and said he needed a set like that on his jeep. :) I left out tbe part about subbing out the bulbs. That was the good old days of real metal reflectors and real glass lenses and not the crap they make today.
 
Seems to be some confusion between whats fog lights and driving lights.
I know the vernacular and laws are different here.Fog lights are pointed low and are low range lights they can be used anytime day or night and present no problem .

I have also noticed an increase in fog lights fitted .Nearly all mid range Jap and Euro vehicles come fitted as standard.

Driving lights or "spotties" have always been popular with rural drivers in particular.
They are illegal to use in built up areas ,or when deemed as not required.
Put your driving lights on in fog and the reflection off the water particles will blind you.

kangaroos are a big problem in rural Australia , they tend to feed on the green grass alongside the highway when it's dry.( This is Australia it's dry most of the time) Roos are easily started and often bound towards traffic instead of away from it . A good pair of driving lights helps to avoid collisions , and are considered as mandatory equipment in some part of Australia.
