I have a buddy at work who I'm trying to talk into renewing his tech license after 10+ years out of ham radio. He's considering a new mobile. Which one of the main players has the hot 2m/440 setup right now?

I have an Icom 208H...I like the wide band receiver on it. Lots of memories too. It also has a detachable front face.

It's a very nice radio. I don't do much 2m/440 though.

If he can't find a decent price on one I will sell this one it has not got much use and I am not sure if it will. :D 73

i use a yasu ft8800 which i like now i got used to the strange look, it has true dual recieve with decent performance in a small package, it replaced an icom 2725e which looked great but the reciever was dismal with breakthrough from local pagers.

FT-8900R

Yaesu has a new four-band FM mobile out. It covers 10m, 6m, 2m, and 70cm with full 2 channel rx with seperate volume and squech and S meter. Crossband repeater, Full duplex mode and ability to work FM satillite. has the WIRES capability and extended wideband rx up into 900 mhz. I'm tempted to buy one but dunno how much it costs. Probably not cheap, for sure.

the 8900 and 8800 look identical two of my friends use the 8900, side by side theres very little difference between them from our tests, they have the same functions but the 8800 is just dual band with wide band recieve.

DUAL BAND MOBILE

I have been using an Icom ic-2720 Dual Band for a couple years now. I have one in the shack and one in the van. I also have an ic-910 dual band all mode in the shack. I like the 2720 very much. I am involved with ARES/RACES Emergency Communications and SKYWARN Weather Spotting. The crossband feature of the 2720 is great. I would recommend the 2720 for a good working all-around rig...
Keep the manual handy though, programming it without the manual is like driving across the country blindfolded. javascript:emoticon(':D')
Good luck with getting your friend back into ham radio.

I absolutly love my Yaesu FT-7800R, sure it lacks the dual recieve as found in the 8800 and it only works on 2 meters and 70 cm FM(instead of 10,6,2,70 FM) but it is very simple to use, uses a standerd 6 pin phone cable and velcro for a remote head mount, its rather small, puts out allot of power and I have never had an inter-mod problem... or any problem. what more could i ask for? Well i wish it had SSB but I guess I will live :)

Take it easy!
:D
