you can, but it is the same pain as replacing your little 4-banger with a V8. The intake manifold wont fit, the tranny won't bolt on, then you have to reinforce the mountings, etc...
 
Also a lot of the time the transistor's gain is the same and you need to increase drive into it to get the rated output. That leads to changing out the driver transistor as well and the same thing may apply at that stage as well.
 
To boil it all down, it can certainly be done, but its generally never as simple as just installing a new part. You have to change other part values and even slightly change some circuit design at times (as with the ERF2030 FET's) to gain the extra performance.
 
Like it has been said, it can be done and for those that cannot run an amplifier thats the only option. The car engine example was very good. Swapping out finals will give you dollars per watts, take the same 80 dollars you spent on your radio and buy a small amplifier, you now have watts per dollar.
