Have you tired a different microphone? Also if you are running a desk mic like the MD-100 make sure the lock switch is not engaged, or the mox switch is engaged on the front panel of the radio. If you have either of these buttons pressed in when you turn the radio on, it will prevent the rig from keying up using a microphone.

FT-840 WILL NOT KEY UP

THANKS FOR THE REPLY,
YES, TRIED DIFFERENT MICS AND MOX IS SET PROPERLY.NOW WHAT IT DOES IS IT KEYS UP ON ITS OWN AND STAYS KEYED. WITH ANY MIC. I TURNED IT ON SINCE IT FIRST BROKE DOWN AND WORKED GOOD FOR 5 MIN. TODAY. SOMETHING IS GETTING HOT INSIDE MOST LIKELY. LOOKS LIKE IT WILL HAVE TO GO TO REPAIR SHOP. ANY REPAIR SHOPS YOU ALL CAN RECOMMEND? I LIVE IN FLORIDA. THANKS

Hands down, Byron Campbell is the Yaesu expert in the Eastern half of the country. I assume and hope that you are a licensed ham op, he has a policy that he won't work on equipment unless it is owned by a ham. His website is... Electronic Equipment Servicing

Good luck with your rig.

I've had my 840 since the mid 90's, it was my first new HF rig. I've thought about selling it a few times, but just can't bring myself to let it go. I have the FT-840, FC-10 and the FP-800 it looks really nice together.
