Yaesu FT891 - any good?

I'm thinking of getting one of these as they're nicely priced & there's not much else in its category.

For anyone that's owned one for a while, what are these like in terms of reliability? Are there any regular problems to look out for?

Also, I've read in a few places that there was an inherent problem with a 1 > 2 second delay on FM when pressing the PTT to transmitting. Is this still the case, or has a firmware update or fix remedied this, please?
 

D5: I like the FT-891...great price break for 160 thru 6 meters/100 watts
Many things in software are similar to FTdx1200 and the FTdx3000D(y):D (own 2)
Newest software versions I think have solved most of what you find on internet as a minus. I however have not seen this issue.
I do however not use FM that often, (almost Never) to notice that was an issue.
If looking to purchase used, I purchased one recently for $400 like brand new in factory box/packing, with manual and all accessories from factory.
New has like 3 year warrenty! (I think) and around $635 shipped.
However like many rigs nowadays...They are hard to find!!!!!
Most NIB are SOLD before they ever hit the store.
Thus the used seller's have taken the opportunity to JACK-UP the used cost:(:mad:

I have "bunch's of Yaesu rig's...Love them all...Have a couple of ICOM rigs also.
Much depends on YOUR BUDGET/ and how you plan to use that rig, as there are others I would suggest if looking for used purchase.
Remember the most important part of your station is the ANTENNA's and antenna equipment(coax/tuner's/verticals/horizontal dipole/beams etc...)
Without good antenna set-up the nice rig is useless!

I owned one for about a year. I got it before COVID shutdown hamfests and the ham store hamfest sales ($549). The menu system wasn't something I got along with so I sold it (but it worked fine)..never ran into the issue mentioned.

I ended up getting the 891 & really like it.

Not too keen on the MH-31 stock microphone, though.

Anyone know of a decent alternative hand or desk mic that works well with these rigs?
 
I bought 2 of them. Love them. Set them up right and they sound big. Mine do have the 1/2 second delay on am tx but so what. Im not talking already when i key the mic. Key the mic, then talk, no big deal. Its not like a 5 second delay time like people make it out to be.

They're great, aren't they? Theyre a little powerhouse. I particularly like the DNR function, and have now got used to that tiny delay.

Took some getting used to the huge menu, but after a couple of days they're easy enough to fathom out.

What mic' are you using on yours, & do you know if the Yaesu MD-100 is any good?

I use my 891 in the mobile, for a mic i use a heil pr20 and a foot switch. All i ever use is vocal/performance mics so i cant comment on the MD-100 mic. I tend to stay away from the radio manufacturers mics because usually for the same price, a little more or less you can get an outstanding sounding mic that will run circles around them. Ie: the hidden gem = an old audio technica at30. You can find them mint for $30 and they sound fenominal on most transceivers, especially with some eq.
