You know you have too many radios...

A neighbor of mine some years back invited me to go with him on some local flying. Had a pair of airplanes (engineering had been a true calling) and we took off to chase what today we’d call the $75-cheeseburger (recurrent hours to keep license to date).

On our way back he mentioned there might be another airplane, and not the ones his sons “owned” (neither licensed he swore me to secrecy).

It was a sweet lady to whom he was married (widow & widower a few years back), but the subject of his airplanes raised some hackles re who’s going to maintain them safely (not really money) as he was, after all, seventy years and counting . . . .

Well, I figured seven. He admitted to five: his two plus three jointly-owned (ha!) by sons & him, and now the “extra” one he just told me about.

I’d have laid down a hundred dollar bill right there at least another.

(Edit: Birds parked at — at least — four different airports).

Right, boys?

Had another friend in those years — Mr X — who was (is) a nationally & internationally known rider & owner and collector in world of Harley-Davidson’s, Indians, and similar types.

I mentioned to my wife one day as we were leaving his place he must’ve had thirty motorcycles in that place. And he & I had discussed three in shops being restored. Had gone over in the first place to help him cart out a complete (rare) Indian all in parts he’d just sold for north of $30k. How did he keep up mentally (mechanically) with that many?. I was taxed by three old cars to keep running besides the first team newer ones.

She looked a little funny at me, then reminded me of his other place which must’ve had forty more complete bikes (knock-out beauty’s), American, European and one-offs. (“Oh, yeah”).

A friend to both had come along — known Mr X far longer — started to add to the tally and clammed up on quick reflection.

I was uncouth enough to once ask Mr X just how many running and you’d a thought I’d farted in church. Never any change in expression, just the barest pause until the next item of interest to us both.

Any horse traders hereabouts?

My state of radio being is a wholly unremarkable half-dozen. Or, okay, eight or nine . . .

. . no, it’s antennas . . mobile antennas where I slipped the leash. Forgot a few. Thought it was 8 or 9. Nope, 17 (some in pairs), but I stopped myself from looking in the back of the pickup for probably a few more to avoid feeling completely ridiculous.

I had (157) CB radios which included Base,Mobile,& Hand Held models.I Sold (145) of them & I still have too many since I may never even use the ones I kept.I have (22) Amateur Radios,& (3) GMRS Radios as well.I also had over (200) hand microphones which I also Sold to the guy who purchased the radios.I also gave him a Turner +3 & a +2 desk microphone & a Studio Microphone on a stand & (2) mobile CB Amplifiers & a lot of other stuff.I just got tired of it sitting & never being used other than for eye candy.I am not as young as I once was so it's no longer nearly as important & I'm not trying to impress anyone. He was happy & not nearly as Happy as I was when he left.I have more radio gear now than I will ever use but I'm going to keep most of it for now. It's just a Hobby & along with my Bass Fishing,Performing Classic Country Music when I can & spending time with my wife & our dog I have a full plate.Enjoy it while you are here & someone else will use it once you are gone so we never really owned anything in this life because it's all staying here when we leave.I kept all (29) of my D-104's because they are my Favorites. {:>)
