your opinion of a weird antenna idea ....

since im on a roll causing trouble , i thought id kick it up a notch and add thinking to the list of troubles i'm causing ... :thumbup::lol:

imagine this .... a similar look to a super scanner , but with four elements rather than 3 , and no switching between elements , it would be strictly a omni antenna and the four elements are not driven , they are in fact just used as directors because ... there's a fifth driven element in the middle . each of the four outside elements would be %5 shorter and positioned out from the driven element the 3-4 ft that a director element would need . has this been tried or done before ? would there be any additional gain over a premium omni antenna ? would it work essentially as four 2 element beams simultaneously ?

Are you just throwing this idea out there for a debate - or are you considering building one?

I would think you are quite pleased with the Booty Sigma 4 you built - only the best antenna out there . . .

i'm sure i couldn't be the first person to think of this , and there's probably a good reason why there not made . according to The Ultimate Guide to 11 Meter CB Antennas a 2 element with a director has 7 db of gain over a dipole . but i think that's very optimistic . just thinking out of the box.......
 
Probably have to sit down and figure out your ERP.

Since it is an omni, divide the ERP by the number of directors to actually find how much RF you are transmitting in the direction of each director.

If the above is actualy how it works then a single omni radiator will out perform a multi director single radiating element array since the ERP will be shared or divided by how many directors the array has.

Just a guess here, working on my second cup of coffee so who knows how much of a guess it may be.
 
It will work pretty much as you think Booty. The radiation pattern would be like a big fat four leafed clover with the nulls filled in quite a bit. You are not the first to think about it. I thought the same thing years ago and actually made something similar for 2m but it was bidirectional and used four directors on either side. It looked like a regular yagi but had a single driven element in the middle and four directors on each side. It was one of those "I wonder if......" things. It did work as a bidirectional antenna with some gain and a definite pattern.

thanks CK . it would be sooooo much simpler and cheaper to build and play with antenna designs on 2 meters than on 11 !!! i remember seeing a antenna for some ham band that was something like a so-239 with one wire about the size of a paper clip straightened out for the radiator and another on each of the holes for mounting it for ground elements , and it was a full size 1/4wgp . plus it would be easy to mount it 20-30 wavelengths high , lol .

Thats the only thing thats making me thinking of taking my ham licence ..... imagine making dual stacked beams (thats 4) and not needing a crain

Yeah but feedline losses on those frequencies are a bitch. :cursing:
 
I have just remember chatting to a guy when i 1st get into CB who had a friend with three 1/2 wave silver rods set up at a set distances apart and could co phase any 2 at a time.... i cannot work out how the switching was dun in my head but it will give you a gain in any direction you wonted......might be a bugger to set up

when spaced about an eigth wave apart a relay at each antenna would select between 50 and 75 ohm coax then more relays would choose to ground two making the third one directional with gain toward a corner or selecting two with 75 ohm and grounding the third also giving gain in the middle direction between each two on a side.
