Which CB Shops are still accepting mail-in repairs?

If you are a rich baby boomer but those of us on a limited income hes too high. $500.00 to work on a 2000 gtl and he did all kinds of additional work to my friends radio thats insane. He wound up telling mike to get stuffed. Idk if he ever got his 2000 back but i know my friend couldn't afford to pay that much.

Knowing that mike isnt into doing bells and whistles mods, im curious to know what addititonal work he did that was above and beyond the original estimate.

Im not doubting you, i just want to know what all he did for 500 bucks.

mike is good and he will let you know if anything else needs changing and price the part, this tech doesnt charge 30 an hr!

Did this person actually ask for an estimate or did they ship the radio in with no instructions at all? Maybe this person wanted the radio restored?

With no official repair places existing these techs are free to charge what they feel is a "fair" rate. Don't like it go on to the next guy, just be aware the next guy may not know what they are doing.

Over the years I have used Bells CB, Bobs CB, DTB Radio and MikesRadioRepair and they are all comparable in their prices.

What is the proper course of action for someone who mails equipment across the nation to another state to be repaired and the "repair shop" never returns equipment, what is to stop someone from setting up a PO box scam?

Is the conned "customer" supposed to contact authorities in both states, and USPS?

Guess I'm a little concerned after reading about "people trading equipment" (on QRZ) and never getting an item in return after sending stuff out, it seems like a hellacious process for one to have to go through... wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Typical recourse is to contact either the local police department's fraud unit if the address you sent it is in their jurisidiction.

And if the address is outside their territory they will give you the phone number of the county sheriff.

A call to the local Better Business Bureau in the town where you sent it can't hurt, but may or may not help. If they have received multiple complaints about that business, they'll usually let you know when you file the complaint.

Your mileage may vary.

I would be interested in sending my grandfathers Hammarlund HQ180 somewhere to get a reveferb. It works great, but drifts a lot. I am listening to it right now. I have to adjust the vernier tuning about every 5 minuets it seems. Not a lot, but its like operating a wood stove. If I'm not in the room with it, I have to keep tending it. If something happened and I never got it back, I could buy another one no problem. But it wouldn't be the same. The users manual is very through as far as aligning and tuning. After I get some practice re capping a pair of Realistic Navaho TRC-30a base units that belonged to my father and grandfather, I will tackle the Hammerlund.

Ok now I'm rambling. I am at the plastic screwdriver level reaching for gold. The plan develops day by day.

Tech are not mind readers and require that you tell them what you want done or else they assume you want everything they find wrong fixed.
This is the info that DTB radio asks for when you send your radio in for repair.

Information that must be included with the radio:

Any radios sent in for repair must include a note with the following information:

• Date
• Full Name
• Shipping address
• Email address
• Phone number
• Make and model of radio with serial number
• Details of the radio's problems, and/or details of any modifications desired.

If the above information is not provided WITH the radio , we will assume that you want all problems seen fixed, and all possible modifications done to the radio. You will then be billed accordingly. In other words, make sure you specify what you need or we will assume you need/want everything.

That's a good system to have for all mail-ins. I use that system for all of mail-ins regardless of the tech. I'm shipping my radio to.

Ahhh, the Navaho TRC-30a! My first CB radio back in 1977! A great radio.
