29 Vs 148

Cobra 148GTL and Grant XL are dual conversion receivers while the 29 all types are single conversion.... There should be some headroom to adjust the 29 for gain in the RX area but nowhere near the 148 and Grant.
Option would to use a preamp, either built-in or external. The old 'Channel Guard' worked well in the 29!

Just look at the receiver spec sheets for the 29LX and the 148GTL, and you'll have your answer. The sensitivity of the 148 on AM (0.5uv) is 50% better then the sensitivity of the 29 (1.0uv). Almost every other recv spec for the 148 is better or equal to the 29. This is pretty typical for any AM-only vs AM/SSB rig.

Precisely why I went this route. A 20 DB Improvement in sensitivity easily translates to an extra 20 miles of communication .....Improvements to those figures can be done but why waste the money on an am only radio?

I like the old cobra 29.
With proper alignment and lowering the dead key they work great for AM, loud audio but not splattering.
No need to cut a limiter or install a swing kit,
As for receive, about as good as most other AM only radios.
Spend your money on an antenna system to improve the receive gain.
For SSB any used HF rig will outperform a CB, like comparing apples to oranges.
