Matt, trust me on this one. If you're planning on using this in the house, I wouldn't. Crazy as it sounds you're still better off buying some old sweep tube amp like a Palomar 90A or 300A off eBay. If a transistor amp is the slightest bit unstable, it will be the dirtiest thing you ever keyed up from your house. Even if it doesn't oscillate, it won't be nearly as clean as the amps I suggested when properly driven. You could save up a little more for a small Ameritron but it will need more drive power.
If you really want to learn how to build something solid state yourself, start with the basic circuits first. Things like tuned circuits and how to use them in matching. Then there are filters. Made from simple capacitors and coils wired together that will clean up harmonics. Can't forget about bias circuits. Even simple ones will improve things noticeably and can be just a few parts added.
You should learn the proper "support circuitry" around the RF amp before you build the amp and bypass the support circuitry first. Then you're just coping what just about everyone else does and that's not learning. Plenty of self proclaimed Tech's use that approach.
