Burial for a Macon Music Legend

A final farewell for a music icon and former Macon resident was held Thursday.

Family and friends gathered at a small ceremony at the Rose Hill cemetery in Macon, Georgia to bid farewell to Phil Walden.

Walden is best remembered for his ties with the Allman brothers and Otis Redding.

Hundreds of people gathered Wednesday to pay tribute to the man who helped shape the music of today.

About 300 people came to the Cathedral of Saint Philip in Atlanta for the funeral of Phil Walden. They included dozens of musicians, many from Macon, who owe their careers to Phil Walden, or simply admired him.

Walden helped start Capricorn Records in Macon.

He also helped shape artists including Otis Redding, Little Richard, The Allman brothers and the Charlie Daniels band.

Wednesday, Little Richard called Phil Walden a "genius in his own right."

The 66-year-old died of cancer Sunday night at his Atlanta home.

When Capricorn Records was in Macon in the 70s, Macon was a hot spot for music. All the legends of today and past played concerts there at one time or another back then. From Kiss, Mountain, Wet Willie, Marshall Tucker, Lynyrd Skynyrd , 38 Special, Charlie Daniels, Allman Brothers, Sam & Dave, Otis Redding, The Carpenters, The Statler Brothers, Sha Na Na(with Bowzer!), Elvis, Zz Top, Temptations, and this is just a few. And then there were the Country concerts. None of the British invasion stuff, just the good ole American groups. The good old times! Back when you had to have talent to cut a record.
