The Workman PP gadgets work well enough. We wire the audio input to the top lug of the volume control. Once the record-level trimpot in the PP is set, changing the volume knob won't affect the recorded audio. Hooking it to the speaker side of the radio makes the record level randomly dependent on where the volume knob is set. Seems to me that's where the directions say to tap in for receiver audio.
Likewise, we put a 47k resistor in line with the output wire, and hook it downstream from the mike gain. This way the playback level is the same no matter where the mike gain knob is turned. Hooking it to the audio pin on the mike socket makes the playback level randomly dependent on where the mike gain knob is set.
Please advise me to what is a good replacement mic for my SR-497HPC... Answer: 497 is "wired like Cobra", so many choices available. That radio does not need a power mic, so purchase a stock "coffin style" mic with a decent cord, like the ones that Astatic uses. The Superstar DM-507 is my go-to. https://www.ebay.com/itm/3050474478...adANq91JSiEEnz8EGqPJRBloTgEyaVsBoCtoMQAvD_BwE $12.99 + .99 cent shipping.
