Everybody in CB-land always says that yet unless your radio has been peaked and tweaked the internal meter is fine for checking on a regular basis. Once the power output and usually the tuning coils are tweaked that can throw things off however a stock radio should be accurate enough to be reasonably confident of it's readings. That has been my experience with several CB and amateur radios over the last 38 years. I used to connect an external meter to the radio via a male/male connector making it about an inch from the radio and readings were always with 0.1 from the internal meter. then again none of my radios were messed with.
