Just joind the group with intentions of finding mods for this particular radio. Did you ever find a "unmolested" one?

No. I bought a Yaesu FT710 instead.
@Retro CB Guy does have a modified one I believe though. He may have some ideas for you.
I *think* it uses a hygain chassis though I could be wrong.

It's the SM5104 PLL in the Sears base. I think HyGain used the Cybernet design with PLL02A chip. At least the one I've got here does.

Anyways, there are mods for the SM5104 chassis out there which should turn up with a little help from your favorite search engine.
