For a newbie the 101 series Yaesus can be a little more difficult to tune with out
damaging the sweep tube finals.
The hybrid Kenwoods are more tolerant of mistakes with the 6146 finals.
A 520-s or 520-se would make a great first glow in the dark rig.
Take it easy Mudfoot, what band, how much drive and in what mode(s)?
Check the input swr between the radio & amp, if it is high the radio will fold back to
protect the finals
Also I would recommend using a keyer between rig & amp. Those little relays surface
mounted that they use to key the amp...
I've been using a Kenwood SP-31 older model that matches the TS-850 & TS-870
color scheme.Has two inputs,3 filters that actually do something 2hi and 1low,and
a headphone jack.
Doesn't match anything but sounds pretty good.
The vehicle is insulated from the road,you are on rubber tires.
Next time you are on a toll road look on the ground when you roll up on the booth to
pay the collector. There will be a little SS whip on a spring that hits your axle and drains off the static buildup so you dont' shock the toll...
