MegaWatt vs. Chinese Imitation 30 amp switching power supply comparison

Really? Mine have been great. How did you isolate it to being the P/S?

Base 1/2 wave horizontal dipole question

Dipoles in a lateral angled configuration work just fine. I have been using the setup outlined in the image for several years and have made many contacts (granted this is not 11m but the theory applies).

    Gain Master Mystery

The GM really prefers to be in the clear. You may not be high enough or have too many things in close proximity.

Help me choose an amp builder for 11 meter mobile.

Good choice on the amp. The 450 XL amps came with either MRF454 / SD2290 / SD1446 transistors. All have about the same output. On SSB I use enough input from the radio (usually around 15-18 watts) such that my output is ~300 watts. On AM I set input from the radio (~3 watts if I recall) to get...

    Lower SWR With Power

In this case, If the amp is inline and turned on, the SWR meter on the radio is reflecting (hah - punny) the impedance it is seeing from the amp and not the antenna.

    Drive to Amplifier

The flipside is adjust the output of the radio to the specs of the transistors in the amp. Assuming 2x2SC2879, (100 to 125 watts each) AM: adjust radio output so the dead key with the amp engaged is ~ 60 watts, If the radio is in spec, expected PEP would be ~240 watts. SSB: adjust radio output...

Best base antenna for under 100 dolls

"Best base antenna for under 100 dolls" I'd go with a Sirio M400 "Starduster". When comparing an A99 to the Starduster at the same height and location, I found the Starduster as good if not slightly better performance wise and a much lower "urban" noise floor.

    Anybody use a Kenwood TM-V71A?

So how do you like it?

    Mic Gain and AlC

Most of the ICOM radios seem to like ALC higher on the scale. I run my 7300 @ ~80% of the ALC range indicator.

Base A99 vs Gain Master vertical

Yes, the slack is for wind. I don't even recall having to cut anything (but then it's been about 5 years).

Base A99 vs Gain Master vertical

I own and have used both. I prefer the Gainmaster. It has a lower noise floor on the receive side. It is less prone to RFI impacting neighboring devices. It is about an S-unit better on both transmit/receive *at my location. *The GM likes to be in open space. Many have reported performance...

    Anybody use a Kenwood TM-V71A?

Agreed - the D710G is a lot of radio. The APRS functionality is useful to me. The V71A can adopt the D710G head so I don't know that there is a significant difference on the radio side. I'd go with a V71A any day if I did have the need for the extras. I also use a TM-281A and for what it is...

    Anybody use a Kenwood TM-V71A?

If I didn't have a TM-D710G (aka the bigger brother) a TM-V71A would be my choice. I have used several and always had good audio reports (as with all the KW's I hev used). I haven't experienced and intermod, so I don't know if that is because it is good, or just wasn't in a bad environment. I...

    MFJ Moxon

Donny, try adding a 1:1 balun (though you can still just tune using different measurements). I use a cheap mfj-915 isolator which seems to tame the SWR numbers.

    MFJ Moxon

    Here's what I have been using @ 20 feet . It covers 27.385 and targets 28.300 All numbers in inches A =156 B = 21 C = 6.75 D = 29.75 E = 57.5

    Buying a new radio

I too have used a stock CB w/o an amplifier and made contacts. I also can share times where the receiving end was 15 miles away and I couldn't make contact, in part (hence my reference) due to the high noise floor on the receiving end. Times have changed and there is more and more RF noise in...

    Buying a new radio

..because 4W barely get's over the urban noise floor these days?
