    Trouble with Cobra 148

On some mics the shield is common with the ground. Sadelta and some Astatic mics have this done from the factory. The PTT switch or contacts disconnect the receive lines and connect the TX lines. Since the shield was no longer needed the previous owner may have converted the chassis connector to...

    Montgomery Ward Gen 719

It is possible to change the crystal X1 (10.2417 mHz) to a higher frequency. I had done this to several of this chassis type and succeeded in having the radio on 10 meters. I remember using a leftover crystal (11.1125 mHz) from a President Washington base. Only drawback is that you have to...

    Update on my Maxlog M-8900

I have been having a great time with my Maxlog M-8900, especially on 12 meters and ten meters. Very good reception reports and some of my contacts said it sounds like one of the big three HAM rigs! As for receive the signals on my end were pretty good and the S meter is fairly accurate. Only...

CB radio shops in NJ in the 70's 80's & 90's

Slightly off topic.... I do not know much about the shops on the East Coast but I remember a few from other areas around the country. It may be a good idea to expand this, the stories may be of interest with humor and history. 73 mechanic

    Introducing the CBduino

It is good to keep a posting here of your finds with Arduino.... I am pretty sure there are several Yahoo groups for this now but with the controlling of other projects there should be some interest. Keep in touch and post here.... 73 mechanic

    Introducing the CBduino

Looks good so keep going! I proposed using an Arduino or DDS in a Yahoo group called CB to HAM, where the experimenters modify CBs to the HAM bands. So far this has not gone far and I am not into Arduino fully. I will keep an eye on the progress.... 73 mechanic

    Tram 1480 dual band vertical

New antenna for me, the Tram 1480, two meter and 70 cm collinear base. I bought this at of all places.... Walmart! $45.59 and threw a little something for my XYL so it could be shipped to my door for free. Not a bad antenna, a clone of the Diamond x200 with a few others like so. Good reports...

    wow Imax 2000

That is true in many cases but usually at the cost of power loss and possible damage to the PA stages. Most of the amateur bands are harmonically related and chosen for that reason. So it is very possible to use one antenna for several bands.... but.... there is the matter of impedance matching...

    Something for the Antenna gurus...

I use wire dipoles for any band 10 megahertz and lower (longer wavelength). Using aluminum dipoles at 40 or 75 meters are an engineering nightmare! 73 mechanic

my 142 GTL - CAUTION! - graphic images

Three pin potentiometers with one pin not used is a variable resistor, with all pins in circuit the pot becomes a true potentiometer in that it can reference a signal to ground or divide power or signal between two stages. Your pics show a variable resistor application, usually for setting the...

nostalgic radio i found in a box at my shop today with 2 channel selector knobs

The two channels knobs were more or less BCD (Binary Coded Decimal) switches to program the PLL frequency synthesizer. The FCC did not like these much as they covered too many frequencies and 'in-betweens'! I miss my CPI.... 73 mechanic
