I believe you!! I've experienced LDE a few times.
No you cant just put it down to "skip".Even hearing your own sig long path only results in the last syllable then click.
How far would a radio wave have to travel for you to hear your own call back? Two three times round the earth. Some have...

Plug it in already and see if it suits your purpose.
And you can purchase a stereo to mono adapter for a few bucks if you cant solder.
P.s best speaker I have in the shack is a old (non powered ) HI FI speaker with a switch installed so I can switch out the tweeter. (hi cut)
P.s the vk6 ant is using a 10m squid pole ( fishing pole) but you get the idea. Balun is a good idea but most likely not required on a ground plane 1/4 wave.
You could gut the imax and use it for parts.
Amateur radio is not a plug and play hobby .have fun with it . 73s from VK4 AAP
1/2 hours work, real easy antenna project to get you started.
If you are worried about the voltage on the radials use insulated wire.
Or go with the vertical dipole idea. buy a 10m fishing pole off ebay to support it.
Only if you keep trying to use a cb ant.:D.
Think man ! there is plenty of options.
You could use the imax as a mast for a inverted v surely you have someplace to tie off the ends to ,Roof gutter ,fence ,dog pen etc,.
Or how about a 1/4 wave ground plane. using wire ground planes.
Or a...
Yes thats the problem. The coax is acting as a counterpoise and is radiating. Look up
CMC ( common mode current ).A good earth connection will most likely fix it.
OK thanks for the correction Guys very informative. The mystery remains though Why in real life testing is the GM so good at suppressing CMC at any feed length ? Found the cap value 8.64 pf for 10-11m.
The GM is a center fed 5/8th dipole so the high voltage node is 1/16th wave length up from the choke. This might be why the GM choke is so effective + its a big choke. Might not be 100% effective but it is close.
I've made about a dozen copies of the GM on frequencies from 6m to 20m all have...
Yes. Interesting experiment when you get your gear. put the coax off the ground tune it up then lay it on the ground watch what happens to the tune and listen for the change in the rx.
Try it and see! Keep the coax in the clear if you can , remember it's radiating and is also potential noise pickup. You can always add a counterpoise later. Also make some sort of station ground !.
Don't do the CB thing and compromise performance for a good SWR. and remember the swr reading will change as you add counterpoise and choke.
Another tip don't cut the wire for swr ,if you need to shorten the length just fold it back on it's self .
P.S BJ and I have worked each other on my...
No not with the counterpoise.
Whole idea is to keep the current off the coax.
Also I agree with Camaro ,put the matchbox on top of the pipe.Like I said said before the higher the feedpoint the better.
Have a look at these Vids I found of the effects of current mode currents on rx and tx.
And...
