If you were in the hurricane zones check in

I was nowhere near the hurricane, and am in no position to be of any assistance, but I like the spirit of this thread, and wanted to say so.

    Yesterday's forum activity.

Last month, my Grandfather passed, at 90 years old. For the better part of the last 3 decades, he frequently told me, "At my age, every day is a bonus." As many friends, aquaintences, and associates that I have buried since high school, (twice, I have attended a funeral for the child of a...

But, there are 2 tubes in that garage-built amp that is pictured, in the original post, along with the Sears radio.

Larry's CB Shop - McKinney, TX

I bought a phone from a guy on Craigslist, a year ago. I'm using it, at this very moment, to make this forum post. My van, which my wife and I refer to as "Old Faithful", also came from Craigslist. I've made a few Ebay purchases, as well. I haven't faired to badly there, either. Of course...

    Sears ssb

Assuming that the 41 year old car is in reasonable, running condition, I'd prefer that over the garbage that's been put on the road, this millennium. Especially if it's an El Dorado Biarritz, or a Lincoln Mark V.

    Sears ssb

My grandfather had a Sears radio, that he got from a tech at one of the radio stations where he used to work. We were going to hook that thing up, one summer, back in the 90's, but never got around to it. According to my grandfather, that particular radio was the greatest radio on the planet...

That looks like a cool place to check out. I wonder if they have truck parking?

    Starting to modify

There's a lot of good advice, here. OP, you may find some valuable resources at the ARRL website. (American Radio Relay League) Particularly, in their store, there is a book called "Understanding Basic Electronics": http://www.arrl.org/shop/Understanding-Basic-Electronics/ I own the book...

    Hurry-cains, and Helpers

Odd, how far inland this thing is projected to go. A couple days ago, I had suggested that Floridians head to North East Alabama, because I figured that it would be far from the path. Looks like I was wrong! Usually, hurricanes lose power on land. I hope that holds true with this one.

Which of those 5 hammers is recommended? And, do they come in gold, to match my screwdriver?

On cheap used radio's; try Craigslist. There should be lots of basic radio's to play with. You could post "wanted" ads, too, and possibly obtain a bunch of non-working units. I think that Facebook has some sort of marketplace, as well. You could try there. I detest Facebook, and don't use...

    Opinions of this radio....

I've been contemplating painting my old van in a patriotica sort of theme, and redoing the interior in a 70's vibe. That radio seems to fit, appearance wise.

No, that wasn't me, lol. He was a pretty cool guy, though. Wish I still knew the guy; he has insane knowledge on a wide variety of useful topics, and is genuinely happy to share that knowledge, and has the patience to teach it. Just a stand up guy.

    Hurry-cains, and Helpers

Running down to a disaster area, especially in the midst or immediate aftermath of the disaster, with absolutely NO plan.... that does strike me as less than wise. *********************** I'm reminded of a HAM that I once knew. 20+ years ago, a hurricane hit his area. This guy is an Eagle...

What items cause resonating in cb or amp during modulation?

It should be about 200 miles to Valdosta GA, via I-75. From there, I'd head west on HWY 84. You should find gas before you run out, I would think. Actually, you could make it out of Florida, without the Interstate, and it would be close to the same distance. Likely be less traffic, that way...

What items cause resonating in cb or amp during modulation?

Yes, a properly functioning relay should not make any metalic rattling noises, BUT, if something inside is loose, maybe it would. (A relay is electronic, so it's got to have metal inside) I don't know. Like I said, just throwing it out there. Other things could be loose inside the unit...

What items cause resonating in cb or amp during modulation?

When one says "rattling", I think of moving parts. Relays, I think, are moving parts. Maybe you're fixxin to lose a relay. I may be way off base, though. I am, by no means, an expert. But, I figured I'd throw that out there. If I'm wrong, someone is sure to let us know, lol.

    cobra 29 questions.

Heh. Echo. I was really excited when I bought a radio with echo. I finally had a "cool" feature. Then I realized how annoying it was to listen to, and turned my echo off. I actually just had to look at my current radio to see if echo was even a feature.

I love Florida. I was born there (though, by my 1st birthday, I was living elsewhere). My prayers are with my Floridian brethren.

    Recommend a Wattmeter

Kopcicle, you were fortunate. Unfortunately, I have no "Elmer". While the project that you mention sounds like a lot of fun, I would have to buy a good meter to calibrate against, and then I wouldn't need to make the meter.
