I'm going to be putting up a 30ft Rohn tower. Antenna will be a 3 element.
I'm going to attach it about 20 / 25ft up to the gable of the house.
Question, how much of a concrete base do I need to put this thing in? I see people quoting a cubic yard of concrete, but that seems to be for free...
I just got a used 25G tower. 2 - 10ft sections, plus the torpedo top section.
Currently it has no provisions for mounting a rotor. Can someone point recommendations/instructions for installing a rotor to turn a small load beam. (no more than 9 ft boom). For something this small is a...
I'll be moving soon and am thinking about what antenna to put up at the new shack.
I'll have access to a 40 ft tower.
I can put back up my old 5/8w Maco or was thinking of going with something like the Vector 4000. I have no complaints with the Maco, but I'm not sure what I'm missing out in...
Hi Guys, I have an update to this problem. I found out that D16 was shorted, 3 tubes were bad, and 3 resistors (under the tube chassis were blown).
I replaced all 4 tubes. I have replaced the D16 diode as well as performed the AL811 mod from w8ji.com consisting of removing the resistors and...
Like some others I think I might be victim of an amp damaged in shipment. (I'd like to see the best in people and hope the guy wouldn't have sold me a bad amp)
Anyway here is my issue:
I've replaced all 4 tubes with a never used, matched set.
At Standby, switch in HV, it reads 1700 volts...
To close the loop on this.... I bought 50ft of new LMR-400 to fix the SWR problem, only to find, with the new Coax the SWR was exactly the same as it was with the 22 year old stuff.
The problem was that one of that clamps that connected the coax feed to the "Hoop" Ring at the bottom of the...
Thanks for the ideas. Last evening we got some rain, and I noticed that the SWR went DOWN during the rain. Now this morning, its back up again. Does this give us any additional clues to where the problem might be? Coax the most likely culprit?? No visible damage to the antenna itself...
I fired up my radio for the first time in a year or two and I noticed that on both the radio's built in power meter, as well as on my external meter, my power output is only about half of what it should be.
I then checked the SWR and noticed it to be way up from what I remember it being back in...
Instead of running multiple amps, which will no doubt sound bad, why not pick up a nice Kenwood, Icom or Yaesu and have a real nice sounding station? One of these used isn't going to cost anymore (and maybe less) than all those 'pills'
When doing these antenna comparisons, isn't it important to test with stations which are varying distances away from the source? Due to varying angles of radiation, antenna A might work better at < 20 miles, while in the same test antenna B might out perform at distances of > 20 miles...
Holy cow. Seems like a amp that takes 40 watts in to give 120 is terribly inefficient. Like... WHY BOTHER Inefficient. 40>120 is something like a 4.75 db increase, right. From what I understand you need to increase the signal 5db before it will even be noticable by the other person on the...
I've built myself a 2 element rectangle moxon out of alumining tubing. SWR is a pretty decent 1.3:1, however it almost always under performs my 5/8 wave Maco.
The Maco is about 15 feet higher up, but for DX I wouldn't expect that to matter so much. On the receiving end the Moxon is...
I've often wondered the same thing. The Ranger 2950 seemed like a nice step forward in the mid 90's but most of the crap being sold today be it a Magnum , a Galaxy or whatever is the same 70's era design, with the switch needed to get the extra channels. Not going to buy one of those. And...
Gamegetter - Thanks for the link to Mosley. Their MiniBeam is exactly what I was looking for, though that price is a bit steep.
Henry - Can you suggest any books for building Moxon antennas? I'm not interested in the theory behind them, just the nuts and bolts of how to construct one...
So we know there is 1/4 wave, 1/2 and 5/8 wave vertical/omni antennas, with the longer antenna giving better performance.
It seems that all directional antennas are built on roughly a half wave design with element lengths in the neighborhood of 18 feet.
Question:
1. Has any one ever...
TELEX/HYGAIN's own advertising called it a 5/8 wave. Maybe thats cause no one back in the day knew what .64 wave was. In fact I never heard the term until the last year
(Since 5/8 = .625, thats so close to .64 probably not worth arguing about)
