Living in the foot hills of the San Gabriel Mountains, we get 20-30 every time the sun goes down. Last weekend we has 90+mph winds...my 60' tower and 38' six element has never failed.. I had it as high as 120'...but the shinny aluminum can be see a little too far for me!

Last week a guy was splashing me on channel 28...from 6. I should have recorded the psychedelic colors on my sdr's screen.
Lots of real good sounding stations on 28 these days.
There certainly is a nitch market for quality electronics. But on paper..it ain't enough to mass build.
But if people are spending $300+ for a 20 year old cobra 2000, I would guess a percent would spend $800 plus on a good American radio. At least I would.
I think you got the right attitude. Too many ducks and super hams..Start small, ask questions. Your not reinventing the wheel. I can't tell you ham many "experts" said it wasn't possible to key north of 20kw in a mobile back in the '90's.

I regularly talk from my house (south of Littlerock ca) to north Bakersfield with any issue (5/8 wave). Some knife edge down around Disneyland to the south.
6 element on the Flat side to Santa Maria,Ca a few times..around 140 miles...hit or miss.
