Large Linear ...

Really don't need that big a amp with a base set-up...Go bigger on the tower and antenna...I've talked to Australia and New Zealand with just my 1x3 Kicker 500 tube amp and L4 quad on my 40' tower before, and some stations over on the east side of the pond in Ireland, Germany, and the UK...
I agree with you jessejamesdalas, although some people just don't have the room for a tower and beam, so then I can see the need for the extra juice.

My 100 watt mobile radio & beam work just great. I now have 218 dxcc with this combination on 11 meters. Reunion Is., Comoros Islands, Seychelles Islands,
Rodriguez Island & Madagascar, all in the Indian Ocean and worked with the above combo.

Not enough power - you can hear far off DX stations but they can't hear you

Too much power - far off DX stations can hear you but you can't hear them

That's why increasing antenna gain is better than just increasing wattage in many cases.

Im not a dxer. Most on my 11m talking was local and there were folks in multiple directions.

The ones with big beams were annoying because they couldn't hear someone, had to turn the beam, then someone else couldn't hear them and they had to turn the beam, then someone else.....the conversation revolved around them turning their beam and how good everyone could hear them. The ones running omnidirectional antennas and power got to enjoy radio after they shut up.

I guess the moral of the story is that there's a tool for every job and don't be a bonehead.

There is a kd175 version and a jd200. I have the kd175 and it runs at 12 to 12.5 volts. Any higher and the over voltage protection will trip. I believe the ovp is easier to defeat on the jd200.
How do you tell which one you have?

I'm not sure. It's been more than 5 years since I bought mine. The way I have them mounted I can't see the data tag. RC forums have a lot of info on these power supplies. They use them as battery chargers.

That is a picture of the one I have. I converted it about 4 or 5 years ago.
I paid more for the cord than I did for the power supply. I think I have less than $80 into it.

Sorry but that's rubbish. If you want some evidence then look at my contesting history in any of the CQ WPX, CQ-WW, ARRL or IARU contests when I was having a serious go at it. I ran 100W low power entries using a G3TPW Cobwebb at 32ft and an 85ft inverted L flat top at 24ft. The Cobwebb was upgraded in my last couple of years contesting to a hexbeam at 30ft. If you look at all entries for those contests so that includes single band, multiband and those running 1.5kW you'll find I was regularly in the top 20-25% beating lots and lots of amateurs running 1.5kW into big beams on big towers and having antenna farms I could only dream of.

And at the end of the day what's the point in putting out a huge signal when the reason you're doing it, what you think is a poor antenna, means you can't hear people who reply to you anyway?

Do you know what 1600W gives you over 800W? A single S point on a CB S meter, that's it. But what it does give you is a whole load of headache and grief from lots and lots of common mode RFI given the way your typical CBer installs antennas and does a piss poor job of RF grounding. If they can't even get it right for 20W what hope have they for doing it with 1600W?

The problem with big power is it doesn’t help your ears. Can be very frustrating...especially for the other end.

Was trying for a contact with Spain this AM...he had me at 55 (coordinating online). But I couldn’t hear him. Just a low voice...”three zero” and then fade. Back and forth for a few minutes, but no matter I couldn’t capture his call. Add in a few from 14div trying to get in, and it just wasn’t happening.
