Older HF rigs can be a bargain. Just remember they are old and expect to have occasional issues. If you can fix it that's great. If you can't you will be spending more money.
The kenwood ts440 is a good rig but they have issues. I have one that has the dots below 15 meters. The conductive glue...
What I mean by annoying is when you get to ch 40 and then have to flip the band switch, then dial someone in with the clarifier. When you've gotten used to a vfo on a ham rig it's annoying.
The peak and tune on a Stryker 955 is a ripoff. They come out of the box on frequency and making the...
For some reason I thought the genuine lmr400 was more expensive. $1.26 a foot at dx engineering vs 99 cents a foor for the Jefatech stuff. I think the cheap stuff is getting more expensive so I've changed my mind. Buy the name brand stuff.
Both of these will work on 10 meters but are awkward for ham use. The channels and band selector are annoying for anything but CB
I would go with the Stryker but the swing mod scares me. Those work fine from the factory. Just remove the resistor for the frequency expansion and you're good to...
Rg213 is good enough for 27mhz. There are other companies that make LMR 400 equivalents at a much lower price. I've been using various flavors of Jefatech coax for years. No way I'd spend money on genuine lmr 400 for cb or HF.
AM has always been a tinkerer's game. Not many appliances come out of the box doing a good job. Most CB sets do better than the typical ham rig. The new sdr rigs with knobs are getting better but the audio bandwidth is still too limited. My ftdx1200 can make 4k ssb but is still limited to 6k...
Once I know where the load control goes for each band I don't do the full throttle tune up....unless the shack is cold. If you know the load setting you can peak the plate tuning at reduced drive.
This may help. http://hamuniverse.com/hfbands.html
A lot of it depends on when you like to play radio. If you're still stirring around this late in the evening you might be a 75 meter guy. Most people will call the phone portion of the 80 meter band 75 meters.
I do like 40 meters but rarely...
Diablo makes a non ferrous blade that will fit a 14 inch chop saw. Works very well for aluminum and probably copper. I believe their 10 or 12 inch blade has the same arbor as a 14 inch chop saw and is rated for the rpm. I've only cut aluminum with mine but it does a great job.
One could argue that there are so many second hand 7300s because so many were sold. Everyone and their mother has one. I don't know how it is in the UK, but where I live it's rare to get on the air and not hear someone a 7300. If you google either rig + issues you'll find someone that had a bad...
The 200 watt pep rating on the MFJ unit is concerning since most use FM on those bands. The Diamond I have is rated for 1kw pep and 400 watts cw on 2 meters. I would veer on the side of caution and assume the MFJ is good for 80 watts FM. Adequate for most rigs but too close for my comfort.
I think you made good choice. When I bought an ftdx1200 several years ago I completely overlooked the 991a and don't know why. It was hiding in plain sight I guess. It would have been nice to have a 2m rig that did ssb and AM.
I would still take the ftdx1200 or better yet the ftdx3000 over a...
